I am overhauling a 3-152G and need some hints on how to install the rope seal in the retainer. I-T manual says to install ends with 10 to 20 thousands showing, then buckle the center portion up and simply roll the seal down in using a piece of round stock. Too much time and many nasty words later it still won't roll into place. If you have successfully rolled one of these seals into place, please let me know your tricks. Thank you.

The seal is in! A mechanic at Farmway in Oregon told me to soak it in oil overnight before putting it in. This is the white seal with a hard black core - it would NOT bend as the I-T manual said. After the oil soak I rolled it into place with a piston pin, leaving the specified .020 inch protruding. Now the overhaul can continue - I'll know if it works in a week or so. Thanks for all the advice! Jerry

Jerry, Are you sure you have the correct size of rope seal for the job? There are several different sizes for different applications. The rope should roll quite easily into the metal holder. Before you fit it, soak the seal in engine oil overnight or you can be sure it will leak.

jerry, i am assuming it is similar to the diesel models, i first make a paste of grease and powdered graphite. coat both seal halves and work into seals. place housing into vice with soft jaws, with groove upwards, place seal rope into groove and work into groove from outer to inner in smooth , even strokes, applying mild to moderate pressure(i use a phillips screwdriver). when seated, trim ends back to about 1/16 in.proud each end. coat seai ropes liberally with grease graphite paste andbolt to crankshaft.remove and trim edges(WHISKERS) from flat surfaces only with sharp boxknife or similar. refit seal with smear of grease on ropes and gasket goo on both gasket surfaces. dont forget to face seal housings with 600 wet and dry on glass first. hope this helps more than confuse. cheers.

I have found that there are two types of rope seals. The first one I used was grey in colour & had to be rolled in as Sibby describes. The second one I came across was white in colour & had a small black piece in the middle of it. The grey one was fitted & whilst it took a bit of doing, it was rolled into place & nothing was cut off the ends. The white one would not do as the grey one did & was eventually trimmed to leave the "poofteenth" protruding. I have been told that the grey one was asbestoes compound & the white one was not.
