I just bought a 165 and I need to change the oil which I have never done before. I read on an eariler message it takes 6 quarts. Could someone please tell me what is the ideal oil weight and brand (if any), and where do you add the oil? I haven't looked under the tractor yet but I am assuming that I can find the drain plug. Also, do I need to make a trip to the tractor dealer to get a filter or would Auto-Zone have the filter?

Thanks in advance.

Is yours a gas or Deisel? Spin on or sock type? either filter should be gotten at either massey dealer or any other automotive parts store. I either go with hastings or Massey, whichever place I'm at when It needs one. Ours is a Continental gasser, it takes 6 quarts, I use just a 10W30 oil. Ours gets run everyday so I ussually change in the spring to get the condensation out, then in the fall or when the 100 hrs comes. If its a deisel, a deisel rated 15w40 should be used, but if not worked hard a deisel rated 10w30 will be fine.

Thanks everyone. It's a disel. I will get the manuals but in the meantime, where is the oil added?

Mike, why don't you try to find Mr. Dean's website. I don't know how to make it put a hyper-link in here, or I'd do it. His webpage is in some of the older discussions in here. Just do a search on 165. That's where I went when I got my 165. Mr.Dean is from the old school-he'll help you.

Either Auto Zone or NAPA are likely sources for a filter. I use DELO 400 in my MF 255 diesel which is a 203 engine like yours. I think this oil is good for gasoline or diesel engines.

Oil choices:
1. Mobil Delvac 1300 15W40
2. Shell Rotella T 14W40
3. Chevron Delo 15W40
4. Penzoil LongLife 15W40
Filter Choices:
1. MF
2. Any high quality, name brand filter that is listed for your MF65
Advice:
Buy 3 real MF Brand manuals for your tractor:
1. Operator Manual
2. Rapair Manual
3. Parts Manual
Don't waste money on IT brand manuals, or cheap copies, etc. Get the real thing. Best money you ever spent. Good luck with your "new" tractor.
