MF 165 oil pressure pegged

My 165 has the AD4 engine. We've had it close to 20 years now & as long as can remember the oil pressure stays pegged to the right after you start her up.

Anyone know of a fix other than replace the guage? She's never skipped a beat so I'm assuming the pressure is actually normal.

By the way, I have an old sales brochure that says the 165 came with "luminescent instument lighting". My guages don't glow, is there an inverter or something to power the instruments?
I've replaced all the wiring over the past year & followed the diagrams in the manual.

It just buggs me when things don't work.

Thanks,
Jeff

Mine was doing this same thing and I finally tracked it down to what I believe is the oil return line. about 1 1/4" rubber hose on the top front of the engine block. When I started the tractor the back pressure would squeeze it together and block it off.

Tell me more, you're return line is softened maybe? Suction caused by back pressure is collapsing the hose?

Jeff, It was explained to me that the lighting was called Elecro-luminescence, where the instrument dial becomes the lamp. They were powered by an inverter box mounted on the other side of the battery case. M-F dealers are not able to obtain this inverter box anymore. At least that is what my local dealer parts people told me. My 135 also shows high pressure at the guage. I am looking at getting a new sender and see if that helps the problem. It seems to run just fine with this "high" pressure showing on the guage. Hope this helps.

Mine always ran just fine too. I may try Ray's idea to blow out the line & clean-up the guage
inards.

I'll try a new sender too if cleaning is a bust.

Had the same luck as you finding an inverter, dealer told me the same thing. Can't get why they wouldn't at least cross reference a substitute part made by somebody.

Thanks for the comments,

Jeff

The way I understand the instrument lighting, it's sort of like neon lights. There should be a small box near the gauges with very small wire leading to lights in the gauges. A new oil pressure gauge is not expensive; I bought a used one yesterday for $5. I got the original working though by first filling with PB blaster then applying air pressure into the oil inlet. It took several tries to free up the needle. I figured what the hey, it's useless anyway. The oil line leading to it may be cleared with air pressure after you have removed the gauge. You'll blow what's in the oil line back into the engine where the filter should grab it.

The small box must be an inverter. Guess I'll try the volt meter on the output & input wire, see if I get anything. Can't find any reference on any Massey parts websites for replacement inverter.

I think I'll try the idea out w/ the PB, I've had good results w/ PB on lots of other applications. I never thought of it for this, though.

Thanks for the input.

Jeff
