You did not say if the tractor could run without the battery attached, but I will assume that it is. From the description, I would suspect the regulator to be bad. It is also possible that the ammeter is bad too (burned open). With the ractor running, check voltage at the Generator output when you ground the field terminal. (If the generator is like the old Fords, check that the "G" terminal actually is grounded to the regulator ground (base) and then apply twelve volts to the "F"- on this style only.) If the generator is okay, it will put out a voltage in excess of 12 volts. If you are going to switch to a "Delcotron" alternator, with the 2 terminals on the side in a line, just connect those two terminals together, and attach to a switched "hot" connection. The output goes to the battery. The marine version of this uses 1 wire, and it goes to a switched "hot" the output terminal to battery. Check the charging voltage. It should not be in excess of 14.5 volts. It should also be greater than 13.2 volts (in most average weather conditions- actual voltages are temperature dependant.) If voltage is not correct with the two terminal Delcotron, normally there would be a 10 ohm, 6 watt resistor in line with terminal number 1 and you may need it.
