I have a 1964 MF 35 that has no hydraulics,I took the side cover off and when I move the pump lever with a screwdriver I can get my hydraulics to work, but when I try to use the lever it doesn't seem to push it far enough to make it lift. I have had the top cover off and can't seem top figure out whats wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Well I finally found what broke. One of the studs coming out of the cylinder mounted to the cover under the seat. I need to buy the top cover since it is cracked so bad and get a new stud put into the lift cylinder. After I do this then I should be able to adjust and get the lift working. At least I hope so. Now I just need to find some parts. Thanks for your help

The pump should pump all the time when the control valve operating lever is not pressed, and hold and lower as the control valve is pushed in (roller pushed towards rear of tractor). Have you got the control levers from the lift head the correct side of the control valve operating lever roller? They should be to the front. Set the two levers on the quadrant to the setting positions (between marks on quadrant, about half way). Check that the roller is free to turn, adjust with a 3/8" head nylock nut at the midpoint of the control valve lever (bellow the roller) untill the roller is making contact, then back it off slightly. If this doesn't work take the lift head off and set it up on the bench as described in the workshop manual. I have found that to get round the special tools get a big (1" x 6") nut and bolt, keep adding washers untill it weighs exactly 3lbs. Then put the lift head in a vice so that the draft spring is pointing to the sky. Put a bit of string from the bolt to each lever in turn as you make the adjustments and gravity will do the rest. Just thinking about it you could also have a problem with the spring in the pump, put both levers into the top position and check that the roller moves forward and has a spring resistance against moving it backwards.

Wow! you lost me. My 2 control levers are to the front now,but they were'nt when I took it apart. The roller does move easily, I understand what you say about adjusting the nut halfway down on the valve lever. I will try that next. Not sure what else you are talking about though. The guy I bought it from said he heard a pop when he was grading and the hydraulics went all the way up then came down and did not work again. Thanks for the help

Sorry, it does get confusing talking about levers, levers and levers... The quadrant is the quarter circle shaped part to the right of the seat on which the operating levers are mounted, one for position, one for draft. When you take the lift head off you will see two levers which come down to operate the control valve on the pump. This has a 'see saw' with a roller at the top, an adjusting bolt in the middle, and is connected to the internal control valve at the bottom. You need to ascertain whether the pump unit is at fault, or whether it is being fed incorrect instructions by the lift cover... I'm trying to think of a reason why the levers should have jumped over the pump. I've had it happen when they've been put together wrongly but never seen one jump in service. I have heard of the roller coming off but it sounds like this is still intact. From the sudden failure adjustment would not be a solution I don't think. The lever with the roller at the end should be sprung towards the front of the tractor with a force of 3lbs - hence the lift head setting. If this is not the case then the control spring has broken, allowing the valve to float. Pull the lift head off and take the pump out - it comes out of the top if you remove the PTO shaft and gears, the shear tube and transmission top output shaft from the epicyclic. While it's out fit a new control valve and either a seal kit or a complete overhaul kit. That's worth doing whether you find anything wrong with the lift head or not as you know that the pump will go on for another 50 years. I know it's a bit tricky to explain without a diagram, have a look at www.fofh.co.uk, there is an animated diagram of the 20 system which is similar.

Ok ,now I have adjusted the nut on the lever and was able to get some movement out of my hydraulics. The best I could get was about one foot of travel up. If I adjust any further I can get it to go all the way up but then it won't go down. What else can I do to make this better. Thanks for your help

I think something may have come loose on the lift head so that it thinks it's already at the top. Take it off and look for any damage to the linkage. I assume that you have got the levers in their setting positions while you adjust the nut?
