I had a 85 givin to me two years ago. It had sat out for 20 years. Probably should have charged the guy for taking it. I had to work over every part of the tractor. I have more money in it than I could sell it for, but it was more of a challenge for me just to see if I could make it go again. Sharp looking tractor now. Very handy tractor to work with, nice power steering, excellent for backing up equipment. If anyone wants pics email me.

But Scott, you probably loved doing all the repair work on that '85.
I have installed a front end loader on my MF85, it has the 3 valve hydraulic spool setup along with 3pt hitch. The loader is quite slow, is there something I can do to speed up loader lift and bucket curl(other then installing an auxiliary pump??) Appreciate any advice and help. You are right, they are a nice handy yard tractor and lots of horsepower.

You will not be able to speed up the loader unless you put on a aux. pump. The pump that they used on a 85 was probably big for the time, but today is considered slow. The tractor that I have was used with a loader and back hoe, but it had a aux. pump. I heard it worked pretty good that way. I use a loader on a 585 and a 856 IH and they are SLOW, compared to my 580C back hoe.

The MF85 I have uses type A AT fluid(so I was told here) for the hyd areas which include: powersteering, live PTO, 3pt lift. Some will insist type A AT fluid is no longer available, just visit ruralking.com and order as much as you need. Overhaul kits are sold here on YT, MF dealers and on the several tractor parts websites tool

Type "A" is now dexron/ mercon III type tranny fluid, just re-named some. I've heard from someone, somewhere, that there was a service bulletin that the type A was to be replaced with regular hydraulic oil, as the other oil ate the rubber O-rings and such, causing leaks. I run Hydraulic oil (Permatran III)in the steering, and the rear. We buy it in 55 gal. drums, so it's the same hydraulic oil we use in everything else, too. We also buy bulk 15w-40, but we still use 10w-30 in our 165 gasser.

Randall, your first step should be to get 3 real MF brand manuals for this tractor. Get the Operator Manual, Repair Manual, and Parts Manual. They are available from your MF dealer. You need all three. Second step: Change ALL fluids: final drives, transmission, hydrolic, power steering, coolant. Change all filters. Use MF PermaTran III everywhere except the engine. Flush radiator. Use 50/50 mix plus cavitation additive. Change thermostat, engine belts. Inspect water pump. For the engine, use quality oil filter, and fill with a good 15W40 diesel engine oil, such as Mobil Delvac 1300, or Shell Rotella T. Third step: work the tractor some. Chnage the engine oil and filter again. Work the tractor some.
You are now ready to assess what the tractor needs and by now you have found out most of the problems. Now how is the brakes, lift performance, steering, tires, leaks, draft control, and a host of other things.
Good luck with your new tractor.
