My son and I have fixed every little thing we can find wrong on our new to us 65. We ordered a service manual from this web site, but it doesn't seem to be coming very fast. What kind and weight of oil and hydro, trans., pow. steering, air filter oil, rear end and what ever I have forgotten do I need. Does the engine need non detergent it was rebuilt in 1998. Amount of oil would be nice also. Thanks for your trouble.

Hi Sibby, It's going great. My 16 year old son loves working on tractors. We started with a list of every little thing wrong we could spot and we seem to spot more faster than we fix the ones we know about. We finished recovering the seat today and a new muffler. Left the fluids to last which I'm sure you understand. 65 is looking good but I want to run it for a year or so before we paint it. Did the same with a Farmall H last year, not much of a tractor but my son fell in love with it. These tractors are for working our food plots, We are hunting nuts!!!! Tom in Wis.

tom, good to hear you both have the tractor bug. its a real satisfying feeling when you complete each stage of the project.i used to do a fair bit of duck hunting years ago, but then our gun laws tightened right up. what do you hunt?

Great little tractor the MF65. Is this a Cont. Z179 gas engine or the deisel? The info I have is for the gas engine.

It uses SAE 30 wt. in the engine 6 quarts. Go ahead and use the detergent oil as you state the engine was rebuilt in '98 and has persumably has new seals. The air cleaner cup uses the same 30wt. oil.

The rear end has two drains and takes straight 90 wt. mineral oil (GL-1) 8 gallons. This is available NAPA stores and Wal-Mart for around $23/5 gallon jug.

Don't know about the Power steering.

Jeff

Thank you very much Jeff and the Dirthog! I do have a Cont. gas 65. I understand that a good diesel oil would be best for a gas engine. You are saying the hydro, trans, and rear end are all the same fluid and same resivior? 2 drain plugs and than I pour the 8 gallons in the fill cap left of the shifter is that right. Obviously I'm a beginner, Thanks again.

MAKE SURE IT"S 90wt. MINERAL OIL {{{NOT 90wt.GEAR OIL}}}the massey no. is M1103 or GL-1 and it should say mineral oil

auto. trans fluid in p/s is reccomended by manufacturer.i personally would never use a detergent oil in a petrol engine unless i was certain it was on a detergent oil from when it was recond.seen many a good engine self destruct by sludge and carbon dissolving into oil and ruining engine bearings, cam bearings, scouring cylinder bores etc.engines that are very quiet start rattling, smoking and its too late.wouldnt the hydraulic pump starve with 90 oilif it was fitted with a strainer?,or is 90 mineral oil a lower viscosity over there than here?also, the final drives(epicyclics) werent mentioned,we use 85/140 gear oil in these units and unfortunatly get neglected and only get attention when they lock up or the rear wheel falls off because theyre hidden in behind the rear wheel centre.do the u.s.a. models have them? coooeee cobbers.

NOW!!! I can REALLY sound like I know something.... I actually brounght in my MF65 books.

Here is the basic maintenance you should do now.

10 drops light machine oil in the each Generator oiler.

P.S. used Type A transmission fluid.

Rear Axle Planetary gears (2)-what sibby calls final drives. Drain and replace with transmission oil (i.e. 90wt mineral oil) (side note: this is not gear oil but is similar in viscosity to a 50-60wt oil) The rear planetaries are in the axles at both wheels. There may be a drain plug on the bottom. (Older models did not have this.) but there is a filler plug on the fwd. side. fluid level is full when filled to this plug.

Repack front wheel bearings.

Put three drops of light machine oil on felt wick of tractormeter (tachometer).

Greese all fittings.

May want to clean the air cleaner.

If you need a copy of the owners manual I have an extra copy.

Also could you tell me where does the tachometer cable attach to the engine?

Jeff

Jeff, I did not get back to you on the tacometer cable because I saw Sibby's answer, He may have a diesel because mine is different. My engine plate says Cont. G176 ,My tac. cable goes straight from the tac. to a plate that is part of the back end of the Generator or altinator what ever it is called. By back end I meen the end opposite the pulley. Hope this helps and sorry for the delay. Tom

No offence taken, not really sure what could have been offencive.

Yes, I agree with you the final drives are often neglected.

Also, I have been told by the U.K. guys over on the fergy board that the 90wt. mineral oil has a similar viscosity compared to SAE 50 or 60 wt oil. So yes you are right the pumps would be hurting if they tried to choke down SAE90. I guess it is a North American thing.

sorry jeff, just realised yours is a petrol engine 65.we dont have them over here, only the diesels with either the perkins 192. or 203.cu.in. displacement, therefore your tacho would be driven from a different place.cheerio mate.

Engine oil is 6 qt's with filter capacity, use a good diesel engine oil.
The air filter uses the same oil as your engine.
The trans, rearend, rear planatary's use straight sae mineral oil, 90 wt.
The power steering says to use type A auto trans. fluid. have fun

Thanks everybody, Turned the town upsidedown no 90 wt. mineral oil to be had. Called a MF dealer which is about a 3 hour drive. He said that oil isn't made any more and that I should go to my local Case IH dealer and buy there multi use 134 oil. He said this is a good lubricant and also fine for the hydrolics, about equivilent to 50-60 wt. I hope everybody agrees with this. I'm going to hold off a day to see what kind of replies I get because I have come to respect what I learn on this site! Advise from 1/2 way around the world, WOW..... Thanks again

I got my mineral oil from a MF dealer here in PA about 3 months ago. Napa also sells the oil, at least they do around here.

Pre Multi-Power models used the 90 wt. oil. Those with Multi-Power use 20-20W hydraulic and transmission oil. I think that is what the dealer is reccomending. The 20-20W will work in the non M-P tractors.

tom,i think you should be safe to use case/i.h. oil in your tractor that you described.

Thanks guys, I called 1 more Imp. dealer and they also said it would be fine. It's going in the tractor, and you are right, When I bought it they said it is about 20 wt. They said the only problem would be if my pump is weak. I'll find out. Tom
