I am in a bit of a dilemma. I have had my MF35 (gas) for about 6 years now and it has been wonderful. Lately it has started overheating and when I changed the oil a couple of days ago, I notices that water was mixed in with it -- not happy!!!

I pulled the gas tank, valve cover, and head and see that the 2 inner cyliders have cracks to them. I have included a link to a picture of the cracks. Does anyone know how this could be fixed? If not, anyone know where to get a new block (and cost)?

If I can't find/fix the block, any idea how long the tractor will last before it is totally unsabled (and ideas on how to prolong that, i.e. change oil before its use, etc)? I own a small horse farm and use the tractor thru the spring/summer/fall regularly (5-8 times a month) to bushhog, drag, and mow.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Chances are your block can be salvaged by someone who can "pin" it. Engine on my MF35 was pinned in 1972, and you wouldn't know it ever had a problem.

I have 2 of these engines that have been repaired by drilling part way through the block between the cylinders, tapping the last part of the hole and installing a 3/8" stainless all-thread rod with washer and nut on the outside of the block to pull it together. One of these engines has been running about 30 years this way. The other, I just had done 4 yrs ago, but has been OK so far.

I have used a product called iron tite from Napa to seal cracks in blocks. It works real good if you follow the directions. Since you already have it apart, you should try and have the cracks pinned. It would also be a big job to remove the engine to have the cracks pinned, or maybe they can do it in the tractor? I think it needs to be removed to resurface the block. or you could put it back together and try the Iron Tite

I have a question on your block repair. Do you tap one side of the block and drill a hole on the other side large enough for the threaded rod to slide through? Do you then slide the rode through the block, screw it in the threaded end and use a nut and washer to draw it tight? What do you use to keep the antifreeze from leaking on the nut and washer side? If there are cracks on both the top and bottom of the block, do you use a bolt on the top and another on the bottom? Thanks for any help.

John,

Call Mac Tractor Parts (1-800-882-4742) and talk to either Johnny or Danny. For many years they have been selling and exchanging high quality refurbished Continental engine blocks. They are very reputable. I've been doing business with them for many years.
