MF 575 Steering complete fail - where to start?

After a sharp left turn while harrowing the other day my right hand tire popped off and I had to get a neighbour to drag me onto hard standing. Ho hum! However, he kept cursing my ability to steer and when I looked it wasn't me -I just had NO steering.

If I turn the steering wheel all the way to the right (no resistance, just a clicking), then it reaches a point where the wheels turn right(normally and assisted) but in most steering positions it will not turn right and it will not turn left at all.

I have oil in (it does leak a bit) but there is no steering, either manual or assisted, just a light clicking / ratchet feel with the engine off. Can anyone advise me where to start looking?

OK! It's solved, thanks in good part to my friend...cheers Michael! :)

What had happened is that the cylinder which drives the wheels left or right (under the battery) had sheared off at the end where the pin in the chassis goes through it. The ram/piston occasionally hit the side and would push the wheels right, but could never pull them back - nothing to pull against!

Now I need to either get a recon unit, dismantle it and get a new piston (and presumably seals), or try and get a new end welded on although I'm not sure whether a weld would hold. If anyone has any comments / thoughts I'd still be glad to hear them!

karl, buy a new p/s ram shaftand anchor pin.worst part is getting old broken piece out of housing.turn steering hard left full lock, remove internal circlip from end of ram andyank out shaft, piston and seal retainer.if it is stuck, start engine, make sure nobody is within cooeeof the front of tractor and with engine idling turn steering from left to right in a rocking motion and it should pop out.grip end of shaft with soft jaws in vice or double up cardboard a couple of times to grip shaft.undo retaining bolt, could be hard due to loctite on bolt, may have to wave oxy torch over bolt to release.refit new shaft with 222,242 loctite or similar on bolt and reassemble.good luck.

Thanks Sibby,

You've clearly done this before! :)

I've now located a supplier of replacement (non-MF) ram shaft. The anchor pin seems OK. The broken part took some removing from the pin hole in the chassis, but it did come out in the end.

I'll have a go at dismantling the cylinder this weekend. I didn't fancy the M-F price for a replacement: 200 pounds!

Thanks again for your help. I'll post again if I get stuck! :(

Thanks again for the help. I got a replacement pattern RAM for 28, seals for 8 - about half the MF original prices!

The job was quite simple, although getting that wire seal out was quite tricky!

All working perfectly again! :)
