MF 165 Charging Problem

I have a 165 diesel with a GM type alternator and regulator under the dash. I took it to the local MF shop to fix the fuel gauge that wasn't working. They fixed that gauge, but now my 'generator' gauge shows a full positive charge when you raise the rpms. System is over-charging now, acid blowing out of the vent hole on battery and vent cap blew off at pulling rpm. I've changed both the regulator and altenator, but it is still overcharging. Someone told me that since the gauge says 'generator' that it is probably wired backwards as an alternator is different. But I've had this tractor since new, and it came with an alternator and the gauge is original. Any suggestions? Tractor is a 1976 model.

Glen, for less than the cost of the wasted replacements of the alternater and regulator, you could purchase a real MF brand Repair Manual and Parts Manual. I purchased both for my MF 690 and they have already paid for themselves. They have detailed wiring diagrams and detailed steps to check out and fix this problem.

Hi, If you put a meter across the battery you will probable find the voltage to be 16 volts or better. The regulator points that control voltage need to be adjusted. If it still has the factory regular you can adjust it with a screw or thumb wheel. If it has a newer type on it you have to bend the points gap further open. Its possible that the repair shop replaced the regulator to fix the gas guage problem. If the regulator doesn't work the gas guage will not work. I put two regulators on mine before I relised that you have to adjust the regulator for 14.2 volts out. A replacement solid state regulator works great, but the gas guage will not work with it. You must use a mechanical regulator. Bill

Had a similar problem on a 150 with the same setup. Fried two regulators before getting one from the dealer that held. Make sure all reg. connections and mounting bolts are tight. Something's not cutting off. Suspect you have another fried regulator. I can e-mail you if you are interested with a longer explanation of what I went through. Might help.

Are you sure it's an alternator? I didn't think that an alternator was ever available from new. Usually an alternator has the rectifier and regualator on board. Assuming it is actually a dynamo it sounds like they've somehow bypassed the regulator giving a permanant feed to the field coils (small wire on back) This is what the regulator connects and disconnects to enable and disable charging. Connect a test light to this terminal and see whether it is live when overcharging, if it is and you've changed the regulator for the correct one then you've got a problem. Check the regulator has an earth still also, I've always found that the fuel gauges stop working because of earth faults so this may have been tampered with.

Thomas,
Yes, it has a Delco-Remy type alternator with a Chevy type regulator behind the gauge panel accessible by removing the battery panels. What do you mean by earth? What is that? And I will try to connect the light.
Thanks

Glenn,
What Thomas is talking about is ground. I've seen that style regulator over charge if you lose ground to it.Easiest way to check it is to run a jumper wire off the battery to the base of the regulator, watch your gauge while holding the wire there, good chance it will go back to normal. If that don't fix it check the wire in the plug that is hot all the time, you should read the same voltage in it as at the battery, if it is low it can cause over charging. If neither of those things fix it you probably need a regulator.
