MF 65 PTO question

On a 1960 MF 65, why am I unable to engage the PTO with the motor running? Now it can be started with the PTO engaged. But, if the PTO is not engaged and the engine is running, it won't engage? Is there a clutch adjustment that needs to be reset or is the clutch just bad? It's a good little tractor. But, that one thing is kind of aggrevating.

I would appreciate any help you fellas could supply.

Thanks.

If I remember correctly, the clutch pedal on the 65's could be changed in position . If you were using the pto the pedal position was high, if you were not using the pto you could change the pedal position down. ( pull a pin and turn pedal on the shaft) I belive in this position the 2 stage clutch would not disengage the pto. It's been awhile, but might pay to check this.

Don is correct, it is a 2 stage clutch. I had problems with my 65. The PTO wouldn't engage. The
PTO will ground drive, but that is only as good as the gear you are in. What I found wrong was that the
oil line to the 2nd stage of clutches was leaking and therefore not pressuring up the clutch pack. Replaced the line and it worked fine. For what it is worth.

There is a clutch adjustment. Try adjustment first. You could take inspection plate off on bottom and shine a flashlite inside to see what is going on whne someone pushes clutch in to release. You can take a long screw driver and try to turn each clutch plate(ther are two plates). You could have a bad pressure plate.

don,try adjusting pto clutch from under tractor through inspection plate.need 2xhalf inch a/f set spannersand adjust clearance to 80.thou.turn flywheel to three adjust bolts with a long screwdriver.make sure you pull out stop on fuel pump first.check freeplay at clutch lever about quarter of an inch.with pto lever pulled back in engine speed position, engine stopped, hold down clutch pedal to footplate and secure with a g/clamp to f/plate.turn pto shaft from rear of tractor with 12/15in shift spanner.if engine turns, you could have oil on pto plate or excess wear in clutch linkages or pressure plate links.
