Can anybody help?

I have an old MF 590 two wheel drive.

The steering has all but packed up. The steeing wheel turns freely but has little effect on the front wheels!

There's loads of oil in the main transmission, and the loader & other hydraulics work fine.

I can't see a seperate resevoir for the steering.

All ideas very welcome

Frank

Highly recommend you get to your dealer and buy some real MF manuals; Operator Manual, Repair Manual, and Parts Manual. Your power steering has a seperate oil supply and pump. After reviewing the manuals post back if you have any other steering problems and I will help you. I have a MF 690, 1983 model.

Floyd

Thanks for your reply.

I found the pump ok.

Is the reservoir an integral part of the pump?

If so there's a 19mm plug on it - do I put oil in there?

Many thanks

Frank from the UK

The reservoir is integral. The pump front seal has a habit of packing up releasing the oil into the main engine sump. I can't remember whether Power Assist was an option on 500 series but I think it was. If so the linkage in the front end has a habit of wearing causing problems. If the pump has pipes leading towards the steering column then you have hydrostatic steering which is better, as a worn front linkage here will just mean you have lots of steering play. If the pump seal is leaking take it to a speciallist for repair, the shaft tends to wear as badly as the seal so you often can't repair it without fitting a new shaft.
