Im stumped- #4 plug won't fire

My project tractor;1968 MF135 w/continental Z145 gas engine has me stumped. I've installed new plugs, wires, distributor cap, one at a time and #4 spark plug will not fire. It happened suddenly. I've swapped plugs and wires with the other three cylinders that run great, with the same results. What are the chances the coil is faulty? Any suggestion to solve this?

Everything mentioned in my first post was changed after the missing began. I haven't yet ran a compression test, but I now suspect a broken valve spring. I started the tractor last evening, and it backfired quite loudly. This indicated fuel was entering the combustion chamber. I'll post the results of the compression check later. Thank you gentlemen for the advice.

Ray, How's the distributor look? Is the bushing and the shaft OK? After 50 years , my old Delco 111740 was so worn, both bushing and shaft with the points closed I could move the shaft so that the gap was greater than 0.030" and the dust seal in the dust cap was enlarged from the shaft wobble. Cost me $100 to get it completely rebuilt.

As the other writer said, it could be a bad cap. Check for continuity through the cap. Though I've never had a bad spark plug, you can never say never. Hope this helps.

You probably have a bad spark plug. Some mfg's plugs aren't as good as others.

I reread your post, and didn't see you changed plugs around too. Did you replace the distributor cap too? I replaced one on a Farmall B once, the tractor ran on four for a few minutes, I looked at the inside of the cap and the electrode where the rotor fired had buildup, and it wasn't making contact.. Check the cap to make sure there is no buildup, rough up the trodes with some sandpaper...

Ray...if you have moved the suspect plug and wire to another cylinder and it still does not fire on #4 then check the cap,(I have seen cheap caps with no connection from the bottom to top posts )
I would also verify that you have compression on #4 cylinder...one other thing I thought of would be a bent distributor shaft...I've seen coils break down, but its highly unlikely it would happen on the same cylinder everytime...

post back what you find...
have a nice day
