what's that tank in front of the radiator for? I know that it is for oil to the hydrullac pump, but I don't know if it is a overflow tank? what for oil do you put in there, and how full should it be? thanks, I appreciate all your information. Cletus. ps massey harris 44

thanks, Aiberta, for the information you sent me. the tank is empty now, should I put some oil in it; if so, does it take the same oil as what goes into the engine? the only thing I'm using is a cylinger in the back. thanks Cletus

Use hydraulic oil, most any auto store will sell it. Costco sells it up here pretty cheap and so does Walmart.

It's the oil reservoir for the hydraulic oil, you were right. Sort of the equivalent of the oil pan on your engine. Nothing is pressurized up in there, just a low pressure holding tank. When you use say your front end loader, the tank gives up some of it's oil reserve to move those hydraulic rams, but when the bucket is down, then that extra hydraulic fluid goes back to the holding tank. The hydraulic pump of course supplies the pressure. The reserve tank is sometimes mounted in front of the rad because it is out of the way and does get some cooling effect from the airflow. That oil does pick up heat. There are some great articles in the "articles" section in the left hand margin here at YT on hydraulics and how they work, lots of information in there.
