MF 97 clutch problem

I recently purchased an MF 97 which I undestand to be a MM 705. The clutch gave out loading it onto the trailer. I was told it was the "shifter ring" that broke. From the MM-19 IT manual (page 64, Fig 167, part # 22) it looks like the part comes in 2 half circle pieces. I was told it could be installed through the 4 bolt access plate on the side of the transmission without splitting the tractor. Does anyone have any experience at this??
