MF65 - Air Cleaner System (What does it look like?

I just purchased my second Ferguson a nice looking 1958 MF-65 (gas). It had one owner before me and spent its life garaged when not in the field. When it was put away for the last time the owner changed the Hydrolic and motor oils and drained all the gas. Spark is strong and it runs great.

The only thing that was not taken care of was the air cleaner system. I found a stick (5 inch twig really) down in the cup and a 1/2" thick layer of sludge. After cleaning that out I knowticed that there are extra parts compared to my TE-20 and there may be some missing parts. Thus I need you assistance in understanding what is ment to be there and what may be missing.

1st) The air cleaner oil cup has 2 cups. A standard looking 3 inch deep cup and an incert cup that has a shallow pan in the middle and 4 slots along the perimiter to allow access to the outer cup. I presume this is normal, but it seams to me that the oil in the main cup is cut off from the system. The fill line on the outer cup is below the pan on the incert, yet the incert has a fill both cups line on it. Can someone explain how this works?

2nd) The intake under the hood has nothing covering it. There are slots that look like a screen or something should be there but it is just the center tube. What should be in this position if anything?

Thanks
Jeff

I have a 1962 MF-65 Gas. It also has the smaller inner cup so I assume that is standard although I too have wondered why it is there.

At the top of the intake horn where it touches the hood is a rubber gasket that seals against the bottom side of the hood. The emblem on the front of the hood is backed by a screen through which the air is drawn. Your setup may be different.

You might want to look up into the spot where the cup attaches after removing it, mine is filled with a steel wool of sorts that the oil gets sucked up onto to help filter out dust etc.

Craig,

I was explaining to a colleague how the oil bath air filter works when it dawned on my why the second cup.

The second cup it to keep the oil cleaner so less oil needs to be replaced each service period.

As you may know, the oil bath air filter's first line of defense is the screen you describe. Next the air goes down the center tube and has to make a 180 deg. turn. This throws the heavier particles into the oil cup to stick to the bottom. With the second cup this "sludge" then forms on the bottom of inner cup, which has a small amount of oil. The main cup then holds the oil reserve to supply the packing. The engine vacuum draws up this oil into the packing. Also as the oil circulates back into the cups the dirt is again deposited onto the shallow pan of the inner cup while clean oil flows through the slots back into the outer cup.

Thus only about 1/2 cup of oil would need to be replaced with daily maintenance compared to the 3 cups of the whole system.

Pretty damn ingenious.

I never really took the time to think it through but it makes sense the way you describe it.

Thanks Craig,

The air filter does have the packing "Steel wool of sorts". It just does not have the hood emblem, nor is there a rubber boot or screen. I just have a clear shot down the inlet tube to the oil cup. I figured there would at least be a screen to keep the big stuff out.

I did see replacement hood emblems for around $50.00 I may have to get one.
