I just purchased a 1987 Massey 1030 with a loader. I am having trouble getting into "float". I push the lever all the way forward on the loader but it just gives down pressure. Am I missing something? Please let me know and sorry if it is a dumb question.

Not all hydralic controls come with the float option installed on them, are you sure you have a float valve in your controls?

How can I tell if the float valve is there? Also, is it possible to add one and if so how much does it cost?

If you look on the back side of your controls there are round nobs sticking out, that look like a metal spool of thread. If you have a float spool on one of these controls it will be longer than the others. Non-float spool roughly 3/4 inch and float spool about 1 1/2 inches. When I asked the dealer about converting one to a float he said it's not worth the trouble.

I have a longer one on there. So is there an adjustment to make it work?

Your out of my league on how to fix the insides of those things. I know the local farm shops around here sell rebuild kits for them, but I'v never had to go there yet.

What is the model of your loader itself? Is is a
1016? It is modeled seperately from the tractor.
The l016 should have had a float position. Some
had vertical and earlier had horizontal valve spools. If a reasonable snapping of the lever will
not put into float a leakage of oil into the spool
cup may lock up valve. Earlier loaders though may
not have float (216 etc.)Also you can convert two
lever valve into single lever control. Can call
763-682-2699 early eve if nothing works.
