I have a 47 pony with what appears to be a MZ414 10 autolite 6V starter. It is grinding 2 out of 3 times when I try to start it. I have taken the starter out and it looks like the pinion is only going in about a third of the way into the ring gear. My question is " Is this the right starter for the tractor. The casting in front of the nose piece of the starter has been knocked out. It appears this was done to accomodate the starter. I don't think this was a factory modification. I am considering getting the starter rebuilt but want to make sure that this will fix the problem. The ring gear is in ok shape.

thanks for your help

My Pony parts book calls for a Auto-Lite MZ-4146A Massey Harris number 851076-M1.

I have a copy here of a publication called "Canadian Motor Products" which listed applications such as the Pony, etc. It lists the Pony as having starter MZ4146 (it is a bit unclear, I think that last number is 6) from 1947 until 1950. Then it seems to change and says from 50-51 they used MZ4149. Definitely not a 10 on the end there. The drive (which I would assume would be the Bendix) is listed the same for all years, that being #SD57.

Thanks everyone! What a fountain of information. Can anyone guess if a MZ414 10 is a suitable replacement?

I would certainly check the flywheel ring gear
for teeth chewed back. Will be worn more in some
spots than others. I don't believe the drive gear
on the starter ever fully engaged the ring gear.
An Allis Chalmers G (rear engine) probably has the
same starter. Your starter should work but the flywheel gear was a bigger culprit. Try filing the
teeth smooth thru the starter hole. A ring gear
may be avail thru ads in the MF Wild Harvest.

Sounds like the starter drive (bendix) is going bad. If the gear on the starter has the teeth almost worn off in the first 1/3 or 1/2 of the gear, it is the drive and you need to replace. Rest of starter is probably okay.

Thanks Stan, The bendix is perfect the ring gear is great except in one spot where it is still ok. Do you know if the starter is the correct one for the tractor? When I painted the tractor a year ago I got a bit of paint on the bendix. You can see from the paint wear that the bendix is only engaging 1/3 of the way. My concern is that it may not be the right starter for the machine. I bought the tractor 2 years ago and it has been great except the starter.
