MH50-MF35 comparison

I'm a newbie tractor owner. I own a '61 MF35, and I just located a '55 MH50 with a loader on it that I am interested in. I've read that the MH50 was made right after Ferguson joined the team, but it was made for the the MH market. I've also read vague descriptions on web sites that imply that the MH-50 and the TO-35 were the same tractor (with different sheet metal and other minor differences). I also understand that the TO-35 and my MF35 are essentially the same machine, just the new name of the machine once the transition to the new Massey-Ferguson merger was complete.

I'd really like to know the details on the differences between the MH-50, TO-35, and MF-35. In part I'd like to know if I can hook that loader up to my MF35, but mainly I just want to learn about these little beauties.

Can anyone point me to a resource on the web or a book I could purchase that would help me compare these 3 tractors that all seem to be related?

Thanks.

Hello Snoman. I have an original operators manual for the Massey Harris "50" Tractor. Please let me know if this manual is of interest to you. Thankyou. Robert.

I have both tractors. The 50 has a front bucket - no power steering. Not good to turn but a work horse anyway. The 35 we use for mowing and some plowing. I know these tractos are suppose to be the same mechanically but the 50 just feels heavier and stronger. Both are great tractors and you will love either. The 35 sheet metal is easier to find than the 50 if you plan on restoring them. Lots luck..

Thanks! Was power steering just not available for the 50? Do some of them have power steering?

The 35,50 and Ferguson 40 are all mechanically the same. The main difference is in the front axle, the way the axle mounts to the tractor, and the steering mechanism. The loader may not interchange because of this.

The MF35 and MF50 are essentially the same tractor; same engine, same transmission, hydraulics, etc. Main difference is the front axle. The MF50 looks bigger, but don't let that fool you. Power steering is a big plus if you mount a loader.

I got an I & T manual from Tractor Supply that shows them all.

Thanks very much for the replies.

I found a book on the web yesterday called "The Big Book of Massey Tractors: The Complete History of Massey-Harris and Massey-Ferguson Tractors..."

Has anyone seen it? I'm trying to decide whether to order it (MSRP is a bit steep at $40). Does it have a model-by-model detailed history?

Thanks again...

Take a look in your local Barnes and Noble book store. I believe I was looking at that very book there. If it wasnt the same book it was still very good.

My wife got me one of these books and i have really enjoyed it. It has alot of useful info in it. It states in the book that the 35 was the same tractor as the MH 50 and F40, except for sheet metal and dimensions, not sure what dimensions, but I can say from experience that the 40 and 50 are identical except for sheet metal. the 40 and 50 also had more front axle configurations than the 35.
