MF35 hydraulics overhaul - parts?

The lift on my MF35 Deluxe (Perkins diesel) has been slow and won't stay up, so I'm going to finally try to overhaul it. I replaced rings last year and that helped a little. I was almost convinced by a friend that ALL MF hydraulic systems are prone to drifting, but find anything starting with "ALL..." hard to swallow.

I bought the hydraulics repair video from the YT site and was pleased to see that the example they worked through was an MF35, so should correspond pretty well to mine. They convinced me that MF35s do not ALL drift and can be fixed if they do.

Question: where can I get the parts (preferrably in kit form so I'm not likely to not have something at the wrong time) at a fair price, and how can I be certain they are the right parts?

I know of the parts on YT, and there is a "Hydraulic Pump Overhaul Kit" for $134.48, and among the models it is supposed to fit is the 35. Here's the listing:

Hydraulic Pump Overhaul Kit - For FE35, TO35, 135, 150, 165, 175, 202, 2135, 302, 304, 35, 50, 65, 765. Hydraulic Pump Overhaul Kit contains (2) A-184471M1, (2) a-190799M1, A-180924M2, A-180925M2, (4) A-8992604M1, A-1810467M91.(Regular price $147.93, your cost $134.48) (Part No: 556601)

Anybody have experience with that kit?

I also have a relatively nearby Agco dealer who is my local MF supplier, but the last time I bought a part from him, it was wrong...and in fact, I think the same is true of the time before that.

My tractor serial number is 250583 and from the YT serial number listings appears to be a 1964 model. I do have all of the manuals, and of course, the video mentioned above.

Any help with an accurate list of parts and part numbers, supplier, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Y'all...Thanks for your replies. I will look for the parts and get going on it. It really is a must at this point.

Going back to the question - is the "Hydraulic Pump Overhaul Kit" for $134.48 (Part No: 556601) shown on the YT site the correct kit for my 35? My short experience with tractors tells me there are lots of variations in tractors of the same make and model, and I'd rather be sure than get a wrong kit and have to fool with exchanges.

I use Vapormatic (www. vapormatic. com), kit VPK2210 contains all parts do do the pump except the control valve VPK1801. I assume you can get these in the US as they are part of John Deere now? In the UK they are about 100 and 12 respectively (RRP). There was a change to the pump involving fitting rings to the square pistons, I've found that by fitting this kit which contains all new pistons, valve blocks seals and bearings you can upgrade an early pump succesfully. However if it lifts OK it is unlikely to be the pump itself (could be the control valve) it is most likely the o-rings on the stack pipe going from the pump to the lift cover. Undo the two bolts and remove the cover which may or may not pull the stack pipe out, pull out the pipe and renew the o-rings and refit. Be careful to ensure that the pipe does go back into the pump. It is a bit fidly, if in doubt remove the side plate (where the dipstick fits) and put your hand it to guide it.

If you do do the pump be sure to change the PTO oil seal, the first few I did all came back a few weeks later with a leak, it's not worth leaving for the sake of a cheap seal.

The TO's and MF's I've known (TO-20, TO-30, TO-35)all had drifts in hydraulic system. My dad bought a new MF35 in 1964 and, altho lift worked great, it too, would leak down slowly when you killed the engine. I think the reason is that the Ferguson systems all used piston rings instead of "O"-rings or some other type of seal. The rings allow oil to get through the narrow crack where the ends meet, just like the piston rings in your engine.

You can still get genuine Massey Ferguson parts, at least in the south. Prices aren't too outlandish, either.

Ed...

I can believe that these systems drift down due to a slow leak caused by the split in the piston ring. However, this is NOT a slow leak. From it's maximum lift to bottom, with no load, it can drift down when I shut down in less than a minute - maybe less than a half minute. When running and lifting a load - for example a brush hog - of course it drifts down faster, but I generally have to rev up to get it to lift at all from bottom.

It's really gotten to be too much of a nuisance. It gets worse in hot weather since the fluid thins, and while the new ring fix I mentioned improved it enough to satisfy me in geting through last summer, it's time to do it right. I could just switch to a heavier fluid in the summer, but I'd just as soon fix it and have it done.

Still looking for parts info!

Thanks for the feedback.

Hello Chuck -

That settling is normal on worn machines - we've had it on all 5 of our 35's, and one 135. The others aren't worn enough. yet!

We had the single most improvement with new control valves. There are three precision fit washers on the valve body, and even minute wear seems to cause the problem.

The kit is a good idea too. Valves and valve seats are usually toast and the valve repair kits (ball inserts) are not worthwhile. A&I dealers sell Vapormatic parts among others, and our hosts (YT) are an A&I dealer.

A worn pump will blubber along for years, but the kit will bring it back up to snuff.

You've got to peel it apart to do it (top cover off - 4 hours, and you NEED an overhead lift for safety!) - and the kit is a small additional cost to do up the whole shebang at the same time.

It's a small investment to perk up a marvelous machine!

Good luck.

I would second what Jack said and add that you might consider this site for parts (if there is not a large difference in price) and in doing so get your tractor parts and support a good thing going here.

I bought that video too and found it very informative. You should also get Big Dean's CD too.

Chuck, For what it's worth, after rebuilding my hydraulics on my MF35, it held a five foot box blade about 12 hours. Prior to rebuild, it would only hold it up for about 30-45 minutes. C. T.
