Avoiding valve trouble

I was wondering how you users of older Massey Harris gas powered tractors avoid valve trouble while using this new "improved" (crappy if you ask me) gasoline?
On my old cars and trucks, I put a gallon of diesel into every tank full. Will that be sufficient to lubricate the valves in a tractor that will be worked reasonably hard?

the only way you are going to hurt any thing is if you run this tractor 10 hr. a day 7 days a week under full load and then i don't think i'd worry about it. i have two water pumps that run 24-7 both are gas and are pre shi- gas and never seen any trouble most of what i see is all BS

I have a 1600 ollie gas, and probably had about 8-9,000 hrs on it when I ripped it apart. The exhaust valves were completely trashed, 2 were burnt up and the others were very badly worn. Can't prove it was from unleaded, but now I put new LP ex. valves, and the rebuilder put in new seats. Apparently it had hardened seats put in once before, but I never heard of it going to the shop for engine troubles. Still gotta paint it, put it all together, and hope it fires up right away.

I doubt your Ollie burnt up the valves from unleaded gas. There are several other causes: running too lean, improper cooling caused by radiator core, thermostat, water pump, etc. Improper valve clearance settings, worn valve guides, worn camshaft bushings, etc. Good luck with your rebuild.
