Can anyone tell me when Massey painted the Pony grey? Was it called Ferguson and not Massey Harris Ferguson. Name on plate says MasseyHarris Ferguson Serial no. should be 52 or 53. Any info would be appreciated.

Terry,
I just saw your message. My dad has a gray Pony that we fixed up a couple of years ago. From what I've been able to determine, these tractors displayed neither the "Ferguson" nor the "Massey-Harris" brand name - only the "Massey-Harris-Ferguson" company name on the serial number plate. That's based in part on what people who remember seeing the tractors in the 50s have told me. Also, Dad's gray Pony had been repainted red and yellow by a previous owner. When we sanded it down, we found the original gray paint and blue "Pony" decals, but no evidence of "Ferguson" or "Massey-Harris" decals.

Quoting from "The American Tractor-A Century of Legendary Machines" by P.W. Ertel on the years after the Massey-Harris and Ferguson merger: "Massey-Harris-Ferguson adopted a policy of maintaining two separate lines that incorporated common tractors. Massey-Harris Ponys were being painted gray and sold by Ferguson dealers."

What's your serial # ? Everybody tells me that the Pony was painted grey in '53 and '54, but I have a grey '52. Only one person so far has told me that there were a few '52's that were painted grey. The serial # plate should read Massey Harris Ferguson.

I've seen several sources, including "The American Tractor-A Century of Legendary Machines" and an article in Wild Harvest magazine, which say the merger of Massey-Harris and Ferguson occurred in August of 1953. So I'm not sure how a tractor built in 1952 could say "Massey-Harris-Ferguson" if the merger didn't occur until '53.

Hi Keith, I emailed you before about your pony. My brother wanted me to try and find out more info on them. Do you happen to know when the switch was made? He said some were painted grey and only said Ferguson. They were shipped to Michigan and then shipped out from there. If you can help with any more info it would be appreciated. I told him about yours and now he wants to do more checking befroe he does anything Thanks, Terry

I have a Grey Pony s/n 23242 that is listed as 1954. The tag reads Massey-Harris-Fergusen. I have a reference to a "Massey Data Book" that says the s/n 23149-23853 in 1954 and 1955? - 24090.

I also have s/n 23632 that looks grey under the rust and red paint.

I also got two implements painted grey with my grey Pony and two painted red.

Hi Ken, thanks for the info. I'm trying to find out things for my brother, he said that some of the ponies were painted grey but only had Ferguson on them. Shipped to Michigan and then sent out from there. Trying to find out when the switch was actually made and any other info on them. I'm the one with the computer and he wants the info. If you know anything about the switch over it would be Appreciated or any other info.
Thamks, Terry
