I have an opportunity to buy either a 1949 Ford 8N (looks good and runs well) with a mower for $2200...or, a 1959 Massey Ferguson, model 35, 4 cylinder diesel, 38 hp with a shredder for $2300...

I am a rookie, and I am looking for some imput on which is the better buy if both are comparable as far as running condition....are parts for both available and can most anyone work on these older models....any help yall can give would be appreciated..

Irv

just like the name implies Fix Or Repair Daily is the ford8n. it's not fast on race day either. Ihave a 1952 8N that seems to always need something before it's used. has 120 hrs on dealer rebuild. I also have 50a mf with diesel. take the diesel. yes parts for ford are there because you will need them DJ

trading up 10 years to the more advanced,- (power, weight, hydralics) MF35 to me is a no-brainer. we used to have 40's ford tractors around the farm until 1959 and we started trading up to massey ferguson. the new live pto and ferguson hydralic system was one of the best at the time.

About 6 years ago I had the same decision to make you are trying to make. Went MF35 and never regreeted it. Live PTO, more gears, and dual clutch. Mine is gas. The only negative you have may be the motor. Check this site for problems with the 4 clinder diesel and starting. Lots luck..

The 35 should be the better of the two. I say should be - because if the 35 has the two stage clutch then it would definitly be my choice. In addition, the 35 will have more hp. Lots of parts and restoration/troubleshooting advice for both. I'd take the 35.

The massy is by far the better tractor. parts my be a bit easier to find for the ford, but parts are still easy to get for the massey. Buy a good manual from the dealer to work on it. (don't waste $ on an I&T manual!!) Anyone with a little mecanical ability can do most of the work themselves.

I just traded my Ford 8N for a 1962 Massey-Ferguson 35. MF 35 is by far the better tractor. Live PTO is the most important advantage. Almost twice the Horse Power is also a big plus!
