I have an f40 with the following information on the dash plate: Massey-Harris-Ferguson Model F40
serial #CGM 407315 Is this tractor a Ferguson? a Massey Ferguson? a Massey Harris. It has two coats of very old looking paint on it. The first is the yellow or cream Ferguson color and the second is MF red with MF decals. Could they both be factory paint jobs? What is the correct color for this tractor and what is the correct name. I am rebuilding the engine and want to paint all the sheet metal while its down. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Lew

Just bought a 1957 F 40 that is a lemon yellow color on the wheels, fenders and hood. It is gray on the motor and under carriage. The man who restored it 2 years ago said that this was the paint code that the local MF dealer's books called for. I sort of like the colors, but want them to be true to the original colors of the tractor. I am wondering if the MF dealer moved his finger a little bit and got the Industrial paint code instead (if there is such a thing) Any comments?

Willie,
thanks for the response. I thought the cream color was correct but I thought the engine, rear end etc. was supposed to be a sort of metallic green. dont know though or I wouldn't have been asking. just trying to get as much info as I can before I get started.thanks again. Lew

Your tractor is a Ferguson but was manufactured by Massey-Harris-Ferguson after the merger. Your castings should show MHF at various locations. It was the last tractor to carry the sole "Ferguson" nameplate and was manufactured only in 1956 and 1957. The original color was beige-yellow but many were repainted red as it sounds like yours probably was. Your serial no. indicates that your tractor was manufactured in 1957. Enjoy....these are fun tractors to restore and use.

Joe, thanks for the reply. you are correct about the mhf on the castings. my tractor does have the original ferguson yellow? paint with red over it. I guess my question is could it have come from the factory that way? would it be a correct restoration to paint it red? Thanks again. Lew

Lew,

The Ferguson 40 was not painted red as an original factory color. All were beige-yellow on the sheet metal(hood and fenders)and most were gray on the "belly"(engine and transmission). There were a few early ones that had green bellies but the large majority were gray.

You can paint it any color you like....it's your tractor. But to be a correct restoration, it should be the beige-yellow color. There are paint numbers available. I can give you some sources and numbers if you decide you want to use that color.

Joe, thanks again. that is the information i was looking for. like you said, it is my tractor.I still have not decided to do a correct restoration or just do it the way I like it. I really dont have any plans to show or sell it any time in the near future. its just a working tractor right now. I would like the correct numbers and sources in case I decide to go that way.

The one often used that some feel is original is Limco(Brand) distributed by BASF, Southfield, MI 48034. The paint no. is LY-3041(B). If you can't find this, I have also seen the following recommended; Sherwin Williams B54W101 Industrial Enamel White(1 gallon) plus MC15 Gold 48/32 oz plus Black 6/32 oz.
