hello, i have been fiddled with mh 55d for awhile, so there is some things i want to know, when i disegage the clutch, it has hand clutch style, should i leave the hand clutch in disegage postion or i should put the shifter in netural and engage the hand clutch? whats the wise way to do that when i am leaving the tractor idling..hand clutch disegage with gear in drive or put hand clutch engage with stick in netural? another question.. the head gasket is leaking antifreeze out.. so i have to put new head gasket on it.. do head off mh 55 diesel normally become warped or not? if it is warped then i have to get it plane.. also i need some lever for the pto so i can engage and disengage the pto, mine is missing it and dont know what it looks like? appricate any info. thanks again SBONE

Your eyes must be going on you a bit. He said it was a Massey 55, not a John Deere.

yup best way to get rid of them john deere tractors. improves the safty too, no loose fly wheels after that. lol

Shannon take that bugger out of gear if you are going to get off of it or any thing. any head will warp. over heating a tractor will make it warp or if the tractopr has sat for a long time parked it can warp too from different torque #'s on the nuts. since u have to take the head off, might as well take it in and have them check to see if the valve springs are holding compression or not. may as well have the head magnafuxed as well. i would have the head planed any way due to the age of the tractor, may as well start off with a nice smooth clean surface. most places will charge about $20-$25 to plain the head down how ever far u want it. $10-$12 for the magnafuxing and i am not sure on the comprestion test. but all together a few buck spent now can save much mnay down the road.

If your going to get off the tractor most definetly put it out of gear!!! If you happened to accidentally hit the clutch lever while dismounting, it could have deadly consequences!

oh yeah i know it would do that.. if i have the shifter in netural postion, should i let the hand clutch be in engaged or disengaged ? the engine is a real good shape.. i bet that gasket is much older than me! so.. sounds like a easy job for me to do that, it even started in 25F degrees! of course with 3 12 volt batteries hooked up in the battery box.. this is a real easy job to restore..still has alot of compression otherwise it wouldnt start right up like that..

The "put it in neutral and engage the clutch" routine is a John Deere thing. The D's used to wear the loose plates if you left them idling with the clutch disengaged. I have never heard it reccomended on any other tractor.
