I have a AD4 203 perkins engine in a MF 300 combine,it's the same engine in the MF 165 tractor.I have got diesel fuel going into the engine through the injection pump and I am going to replace the seals. What I need to know is how do I get into the pump to replace the seals on the shaft?Do I need to go through the front where the gear bolts to,or through the top where the fuel shutoff is?

Check the fuel return line is clear before refitting pump or your leak will still be there, personaly i fit these seals my self, just keep clean, they go in from the drive end after removing the drive adaptor (allen bolt),no need to go in to the pump it's self.

I'm sorry to be jumping into the middle of a thread, but I'm having the same problem. Replacing the lift pump, and replacing the seal in the front of the injector pump didn't help.

Could you please expand a little on the return line. How do you check it? Do you take it loose from both ends and blow air through it? I havn't thought about this angle on the problem.

Thanks,
Sam

Check that the return line is not blocked up as the increase in back pressure will cause leakage.Normally on one of the banjo bolts where the return line fits to the filter head is a ristictor to keep a certian amount of back pressure or the fuel would take the easy route which would be straight back to the tank and cause fuel starvation, one of the banjo bolts has a very tiny hole in it,so small I know of a couple of people who have had fuel troubles drill them out thinking that they have a faulty bolt. This hole is usually where the blockage occurs, even when clear it is difficult to blow through. This problem caught me out years ago on a M-F 1200, a British articulated 4 W.D.,that was made out of bits of 185s and other odds and ends that they had lying about the factory!thats why if diesel is going to the sump I always check the return line.

The seal is at the front. You need to get the inspection plate off the front of the timing case to release the bolts on the timing gear, and the three bolts holding the pump on. Disconnect the pipes and immediately cap all ports. Take off control linkages and take the pump complete to a CAV agent/specialist. It's just not worth the risk of going inside these pumps unless you are in a clinical environment and know exactly what you're doing. I had one done recently, took them about 10 minutes and cost me 5. Before you do all that are you sure that it's not the lift pump diaphram leaking? I'd do that first.
