Purchasing my first tractor

We've recently purchased 16 acres and I will need to brush hog and do misc. work around the place to keep it up. There is a large "holler" through the middle of the property and it is pretty steep in some areas though I can see that it has been mowed down close to the bottom. I have looked at a Ford 8N ($2500 w/ brush hog) and at an early 60's Ferguson 35 ($4500 w/ brush hog)and an early 60's Ferguson 50 ($5000 w/ brush hog). This will be my first tractor and I am concerned about safety, purchasing the "right" equipment, and the availability of parts. If anyone has any suggestions or comments about the tractors I am considering I would sure appreciate it. Thanks!

Re: Multi-Power and Headlights in reply to JimG, 03-16-2000 08:48:15
If you have multi-power you'll have a handle on the dash...the left side of the steering wheel that has a HIGH and LOW setting... or perhaps what's left of a handle and linkage... or a slot..... the linkage goes down to operate a 'pin' into the top of the transmission...

Multi power is an additional planetary OVER/UNDER gearset in the drivetrain. operated hydraulically via the linkage and a valve.... doubles the number of your speeds... also had a 'feature' where it 'freewheels' downhill in the low range...

Without multi-power, the Massey's can be hard to shift when theres' 'backpressure' from the rear wheels.. I think that's the reason the gearshift linkage gets 'knocked out of wack' on them from time to time.

Headlights.. I dunno... I guess I'd better not tell you where my barn is .. but then again it wouldn't do you much good cause mine don't work either.! Let us know if you find a source.

Best of luck with you 'new' tractor...

Personally, I like the TO-35. We have two and I use one of the with a 5 foot finishing mower to mow my yard.
I agree, if you going to be working on a hillside get a roll over protection bar and seat belt and get comfortable using the tractor before trying the hill.
One other thing to consider, don't get a heavy duty bush hog for the 35. It would be too heavy and cause the tractor to be light on the front. You could add weights but I think you would be more comfortable with a medium duty 5 foot bush hog on either the 35 or the Ford. I priced a 5 foot Bush Hog with slip clutch for $850.00 new in North Carolina recently.

Richard... The wings are the same as the 9n Ford. Dennis Carpenter has them for 17.50 ea.

PO Box 26398, Charlotte, NC 28221-6398

I was at a show down in Texas and a fella there was selling them for 7.50 ea.

Even the 7.50 sounds like a rip off for such a simple little piece of pot metal....
