I need to replace the brakes on my very hard working 165. I have been told that "after-market" replacements will not stand-up. Dealer parts are in excess of $400, "no-names" are half that... This is not a job I ever want to do again. Should I "bite the bullet" and pay for OEM parts?

Depends whether they're dry or wet (changes 1971). I've never had a problem with aftermarket dry brake linings from VAP, you can either buy linings or complete discs. If they're wet you can only replace the discs. UK list prices are around 15/ wet disc, 20/ dry disc, 20 lining kit. If they are dry then be sure to replace the oil seals or you'll end up doing them again... I only use Vapormatic parts for this sort of job as they offer a full guarantee including labour, I don't know whether they are available in the US. I don't see why I should pay well over the odds for MF parts as AGCO boast about how much money they make from their parts operation.

We sell and use brake pads from A&I Products. They come with a 1 year warrenty which is 11 months, 29 days, 23 hours, and 59 minutes more than you will get from the oem. I promise you that if they go bad it will certanly be determined that it was you fault. In all the years we have been both using them in our shop and selling them to our customers I have only had one return and that was a set for a 2-155 White tractor. This is realy not that bad of a job. If you have a floor jack, a cheap cherry picker, and a flat floor you can easily change one side in a couple of hours. But the previous post was definatly correct. You do want to replace the oil seals because that is more than likely what your problem is now. The pads are probably oil soaked. Good luck.
