I have a MF 135 that is sputtering and lacking in power while accelerating or putting the tractor under load. I live in a winter area so obviously it could be condensation which I thought I could remedy by dumping the filter glass and by adding some fuel treatment.

The rough running levels itself out at various engine speeds but only under a no load condition. As soon as the governer opens the butterfly, or when you open the throttle suddenly, the engine starts to sputter and backfire and becomes completely useless.

Should I drain the fuel system entirely and start over? Why would this suddenly happen? Is it a sign of a vacuum leak? Is it a sign that my carb needs a rebuild? So many questions. All answers appreciated.

M. Brant.

Clean the fuel system beginning with the sediment bowl, I think there is a fuel screen atop the sediment bowl, the fuel line may be obstructed by rust or caked dirt, The fuel screen inside the fuel inlet opening may be dirty(do not use compressed air), drain the carb fuel bowl. If this does not remedy the problem you may want to price rebuilt carbs or kits.(they do not have fuel pumps being gravity feed updraft carbs). As previously posted, the secondary electrical system should be tuned up regardless of fuel status.

It could be a couple of things, some of them you mentioned. The vaccum leaks can often be found by spraying carb cleaner or WD40 around the flanges and gasketed surfaces.

Could be gummed up or clogged high speed passages in the carb, or if it has an accelerator pump, the pump may have failed for some reason.

It could also be a carboned, or even corrosioned up distributor cap/magneto cap, take the cap off and look for sooty black streaks or it could be faulty condeser, or pitted points. It could also be corroded spark plug terminals and distributor cap terminals.

It could even be something as bizzare as the ignition coil having a faulty ground connection, or even the wire from the points to the coil.

I would look at the electrical system first if the carb either does not have an accelerator pump, or if the pump is actually functional still.
