I have had an 85 for over 20 years and have fixed all of it.The first thing i need to know about it is.....Can you let it sit overnight and then start it and have full power steering for half a minute or so.If so then drain the fluid and pull power steering pump because the screen filter is clogged probably due to failing fiber pto clutches which some people used.I need you to write me back about this so we can go to the next step. Many things will make you think your pump is going out.

I just bought a Massey Ferguson 85 and the ground PTO works fine but the engine PTO hesitates to start 2 or 3 seconds. The brush hog will stall the PTO in tall weeds and stop it. Also I do not feel a detent on the shift lever for engine PTO either like I do for Ground PTO! I have a loader and the hydraulics work fine for it. The PTO clutch seems to buried under the hydraulic pump. Do you know if I have to split the tractor to service the PTO clutch disc"s or seals if they are bad?

Here is an even easier test to see if you piston seals are leaking. There is a vent line that comes out about halfway up the center housing. Take the line loose from this and start the tractor and turn the wheel left to right. There should be little to no fluid come out of the housing as it is just a vent. If fluid comes flying out then your piston seals are bad and will need replaced. If the seals leak all the fluid fills up this housing and goes back to the transmission through the line. I hope this helps.

I just rebuilt the power steering unit on my fathers 85. I would suggest that you take the cylinder covers off of each side of the rack and check their condtion. If you don't have any leaks I would pull the covers off, hone them out and put new piston seals on the pistons. I ended up spending about $200 on parts on the front rack and pinion cylinders. I had to replace the pistons and seals and hone the cylinders out because of scoring in the cylinders. I also replaced all the upper and lower shaft seals and gaskets. I got some of the parts from Agco and some of the seals from National. The only part Agco didn't have was the seal at the very top under the worm gear. I got it from National. It worked perfect after I was done. You will need strong arms and a strong back if you have to replace all of the seals as the unit in front is heavy. I hope this helps.

We have a MF65 that has had every steering problem known to tractors.
We were able to get a brand new after market pump from a company in Iowa. After instaling the new pump we still have problems. We think the hydraulic ram needs to be rebuilt. It is taking a huge effort from the pump to turn the tractor and it is blowing pump to block seals.
If you would like to email us at home we will try to find the contact for the pump company in Iowa.

Here a couple followups from the archives that may help: Jim: Years ago I had an 85 and keeping the steering working right was a real chore. I would say all you can do is make sure the right oil is in it and pray to God you don't have to take it apart. I did and it's probably the main reason I got rid of the tractor. Eleven zillion little wee pieces and they have to be in real good shape. Good luck. Tom.

Jim: I have a Super 90 that acts the same way as well. I did track down a used pump from a salvage yard in Iowa as well. Eiklenborg Salvage is the name of the place, and they are in Aplington, Iowa. They have had 88s and 90s around the yard and they sell a good number of pumps. They are a little slow at times getting back to you, and they mailed my pump to the wrong address, but I got it for $225.00, so I can live with a few slight mistakes. There is also a place in North Dakota that rebuilds pumps, but again, I can't think of their name. Keep an eye out on the web for them. If I can think of their name I'll try to I also have a MF dealer here in Tennessee that will sell me a pump for $700.00, or so he says. I do know for a fact that a pump from either an 85,88, or Super 90 will fit and work on your tractor. Let me know if I can be of service.

You have to watch out on some of the ps pumps. They are not all interchangeable. I got a used one from a Super 90, and the drive gear had a slighty different angle. I ended up just swtiching the drive gears to make it work.

The 85 and 90 use same power steering pump, different gear and screen.
