I have a Massey 180 with a Continental G206 gas engine. Last summer it started running bad and i popped off the distributor cap to take a look. There was a grey powder inside that i blew out and it ran fine. Every few hours the problem would reoccur. Finally the tractor stopped running and i found that the wieghts in the distributor had spun apart and lodged in the housing, locking the shaft to the distributor. I replaced the distributor and it ran fine, but recently i noticed the powder again and checked the weights. The holes that the pins that hold them together go through are all chewed up. What is going on? Thanks for any help.

Josh,
Stop using it now unless you've got a really cheap source for distributors. There's something wrong with your cam, or something that interacts with your cam, causing vibration to be transmitted to the distributor. It will get worse and eat them more and more quickly. There is no easy fix, you have to pull the front cover. Mine was the nut that holds the governor assymbly came off the end of the cam (mine's a Z134, don't know how it relates directly to your engine). The threads were damaged beyond repair and I also had excessive play in the timing gears. As it was also smoking and had low compression in one cylinder, it was the beginning of a complete overhaul for me. The lightest you'll get off is to find the nut off, put it back on with some loktite, and drive on. More likely you'll be replacing timing gears and/or a cam. The longer you operate as is, the worse the news will be. Best of luck.

Josh,I had a similar event on my 50.When mine broke, the distributor and the camshaft broke.Might want to check the end play on your cam and your oil pump.In my case the cam was not getting enough oil, causing a chain of events that were no fun.
