I have a chance to buy a MF 175 which was made in Britain. A dealer warned me against that saying he doesn't know if the parts are interchangeable and he can't be certain I can get a shop manual.
Does anyone know if the MF's are all the same or is there some differences between them, and will I have to get parts in Britain?

The American MF 175 uses a 236 diesel motor and the british 175 uses a 248 diesel and no, not all the parts will fit each other.Different front axel and different size transmission gears. I owned a 175 a few years back and ran across a British 175 about 10 year ago, was going to buy untill I did some checking. That was the only one I ever seen and it was different. I would say the motor parts would fit from a 275 Massey because I think they used a 248 diesel.

Sorry Larry, the 175 used the 236 (I should know, we had one ) it was the 185 that used the 248 engine.( Not unless the 175 you saw had been fitted with a 248 later in its life?).

Did the British built 178 use the 248 engine? That model wasn't sold in the U.S., but a few have slipped over the border from Canada. A local dealer has one now.

I will check it out, but I think the 178 used the AD4-212 engine

No, the 178 did use 248 after all. The 212 was used in the later models of the 165 ( the earlier 165's used the 203)
Confusing innit?

The 212 is a gas engine that replaced the Cont. G 176.

Thanks for the replies. I was afraid there would be a problem getting parts. I don't want to have to get everything mailed to me and wait for them to come in. I'll just keep looking for another deal.

Parts might be bit hard to find for it, but alot of hte british made tractors can be found in canada as well as britain. as for the manual ebay is a treasure chest of manuals for overseas made massey's.

i know several folks that own british massey tractors. they get alot of parts out of canada.
