At the end of a hard days work my MF30B with shuttle transmission suddenly would not go into reverse. Everything else seems to work fine. The linkage seems okay. There was no slippage preceding the problem, I just stepped on the reverse pedal, it reved normally, but nothing happened. Put her back into forward and drove it back. Still no reverse. Anyone have any ideas? (please don't tell me I gotta tear it down.

May have to tear it down! But first check control valve for proper operation. Get a buddy to help you. Please Please be careful! Get both drive wheels off the ground a inch or two and secure tractor safely, then try to locate where linkages hook up to the valve. Take them off and try to move the valve by hand and see what happens. If it works then it has to be adjustment. Otherwise, it may require a clutch pack job. Instant reverse transmissions are simular in operation to your auto trans in your car as they use a torque converter and clutchpacks. In your case it has a clutch for reverse and one for forward. The last time I overhauled one, it took both clutch rebuilds and a new pump and converter. Kind of expensive but fairly easy to do if you do it yourself. Get a service manual from Massey dealer.

Thanks. This sounds like pulling the transmission away from the engine. Any other way of getting to the clutch pack? I have a good set of manuals. Rebuilding the clutch pack doesn't sound too bad, but pulling the tractor apart in the middle sounds aweful. Haven't done that since OI was a kid (which I definately am not any more.

Unfortunatley there is no other way to do the job. Also before you tear into it, check the pins and clevis's where linkages hook up to things. They wear and can put the adjustments out of kelter. Also where the control goes thru the bell housing there is bushings that wear and can cause problems. If you decide to tear down, you will want to consider a torque converter because if it is coming apart inside, it will contaminate the pump and eventually fail anyway. Check the pump closly for wear and damage and replace it if you feel it is not proper or questionable. I've seen these pumps broken in 2 or 3 pieces due to converter or other problems.
