(hope this post isn't too long - I'm new to this and have lots of questions!)

...the tractor looked like it was in pretty good repair. I don't know alot about tractors to start with so I approached it like I would an auto purchase. He says it is a 1958, he bought it from a guy at an auction about 3 months ago. He doesn't use the tractors but he likes to have something to trade with. It is the 4 cylinder/40HP. The only thing that troubled me was the engine had black stuff around it and everthing else was pretty clean. Don't know if this is oil leaking or just regular wear and tear. Any thought? He has an old brush-hog to go with it - pretty rusted on top. Some things have been replaced like belts and exhaust pipe, tires good. He's asking $3,200. When I asked him how it runs he said he hasn't run it but he and his grandson drove it around some and it was fine..."but that you don't know about these old tractors, they might run 3 years or one day..."
OK. Now if this was a car, i'd have a better basis for making the decision based on what I'm going to use it for. I'm looking to use this everyweekend or so during the warm months to dig post holes, aerate land,plant/cut alfalfa hay and grass and grade my driveway.

What do you guys think - is this the kind of tractor I should be looking for? Any and all feedback will be much needed and appreciated! - Will

RUN IT IN ALL THE GEARS,USE LIFT TO RAISE OLD BUSH HOG.SHUT OFF ENGINE WITH BUSH HOG RAISED,IT SHOULD STAY UP.IF NOT SEALS ON LIFT ARE WEAK/WORN.RUN OLD BUSH HOG (P.T.O.)IF IT IS A "ROUND NOSE" MASSEY IT IS OLD.IF IT IS A"FLAT NOSE"(GRILL) IT IS NEWER.BEWARE OF "I JUST BOUGHT IT AT AUCTION". SEE IF HE WILL LET YOU HOOK IT UP TO A SET OF PLOWS,AND PLOW WITH IT.THAT WILL TELL THE TALE.IS IT A 135 OR A 35? AROUND HERE THAT PRICE IS ABOUT AS HIGH AS IT GETS.GOOD LUCK.

Will... If the sheet metal is in good shape you can fix the rest.... That is a fantastic price compared to the ones selling around here....

Will,
The guys have all made good points. You should take someone with you who is more familiar with tractors, to look over it with you first. But if it IS in good shape, it is definately big enough to do want you want. Mine is 38.5hp, and runs a bush hog, auger, and box blade with power to spare. Good luck, and remember, the paint is not that expensive, provided all else works.

Be sure the transmission and clutch work okay (check to see if it's a two-plate clutch...should have constant running PTO halfway down on pedal). If you don't know that much about the engine get somebody along who does and have them render an opinion, even if you have to pay them a few bucks for a competent ruling. Take a look at the radiator and be sure it's in decent shape.

Make sure the hydraulics goes up and down okay. It's normal for them to drift down after the engine is shut down.

See if the brakes work.

If it all checks out, and it doesn't have to be perfect, but all that stuff should work within reason, then the price seems okay. Especially so if it's Canadian. But a 35 in usable shape would probably bring about that most places in the US as well.

If the machine is sound it should do the kind of things you describe.

All the engines they had in the Fergusons were good strong engines, very reliable so that is really something never to worry about. My dad and I have a Ferguson 35,going on 20 yrs now and have never done a lick of work to it, except a clutch, and my grandad had it before that for 5 yrs or so and he never had to do any work to it.Take into consideration, this tractor is 42 years old, and is likely going to leak some fluids, it's probably in need of an overhaul before long but will be a great tractor regardless. It is likely oil leaking out and that is what you see on the engine. As for the price $3200 seems pretty reasonable, i've seen them go for five and six thousand before. Well good luck with it if you grab it.
