I have a 165 with a perkins gas and power steering. The steering cylinder was leaking a bit so I was topping up the P/S once and a while. I was pushing some snow with it and it started to smoke pritty bad. I shut it off and pulled the engine dip stick and it was about 2in above the full mark. I put it in the garage and drained the engine oil and filled it to the add mark. I used it again and it was still smoking a bit and when I was done the engine oil level was at the full mark. I took the plug out of the P/S res and it had pressure. What would cause this and how do I fix the Problem? I can't do it this winter and need the tractor to clear my driveway. Would it be ok to put engine oil in the P/S so if it leaks past it will slow down the smoking or has damage already been done. What will it take to fix the problem? Is it going to be exspensive? I can do it myself I hope but can't take the loader off it now as it is to cold out and will need another loader to do it. Your advise to get me through the winter and fix it in the spring would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin

kevin, my 65 has the same problem so I talked to a mf mechanic and he sold me an eight dollar seal that apparently goes out on these tractors. the seal goes just above and to the left of the p/s pump. i have not put mine on yet but the man said it wouldn't be hard to do. he also ran off a page from the parts manual just to make sure i put the seal in the correct place. hope this info helps. blister

Will it be ok to put 10w-30 in the power steering pump? Don was saying the oil could come from another spot like the rear end. How is that possible? Is it a hard or exspensive job to do? your description on how to do it would be great.

I'm sure that 10W-30 would be fine to put in for now. I'm confused as to how it could get to the engine from the rear, but that seems to be the problem with my 285.

First thing, there should be a breather on the reservoir so check that it's not blocked. It is the same type as fitted to the lift cover.

Second, the oil leaks past the seal at the front of the pump. Often the shaft is grooved by wear from the seal lip and a new seal will not cure it. It may be possible to fit the seal to a different depth to the original to make it seal on original diameter shaft, but I've never had any success with this method. I've always found it best to take to a hydraulic speciallist for overhaul, as they often have second hand shafts which will fit, much cheaper than a new pump.

Fill the resevoir with Agri MP oil, then if it does get in the engine it is not the end of the world.

What type of oil are you using right now? The original oil was atf, but then there were problems that the atf would apparantly cause o-ring failure, and make the system leak. Hydraulic oil is supposed to be fine in it however. I don't think either oil would cause the engine to smoke exessively, especially hyd. In the old days all the Hydraulic oil was is 10W-30 or 30 wt. w/ a few additives put in by the farmer. Now it comes pre-mixed and thats your hydraulic oil. In years past, I would add a little hydraulic oil just to get me by if I was completely out of engine oil on a sunday, and noticed I was 1 1/2- 2 quarts low. Donvan from Wisconsin
P.S. How's the Hydraulic oil in the rear end? We have a 285 with a similar problem. I'm pretty sure the oil is coming from the rear end somehow. My oil was about 1 1/2 -2" high when I drained some out. It doesn't smell at all like fuel(that much and it would be VERY apparant) the steering doesn't even hold that much, and it wasn't cloudy like it had water mixed in it, and pure oil came out when I pulled the plug.
