Rebuilt my 23C about 2 1/2 yrs ago. Have had many many bugs in it since the rebuilt. Mostly in the fuel system. It runs alittle rough when cold and smoke white at low idel black at high idel. Has great oil pressure. Timing on the inj. pump is correct as near as can tell. valves were set at rebuilt possible valves need setting??Am also thinking about checking the timing chain tensioner?? just wondering what would be 1st place to start. Am sure I have a good no air fuel supply and injectors and pump were rebuilt at time of motor.

White smoke at idle and black at high revs are both due to unburnt fuel. Might be worth disconnecting heater plug fuel supply in case that is leaking fuel into manifold. You'd need to disconnect pipe and plug it. I think a slack or worn timing chain would tend to give an erratic idle with puffs of white smoke. If its constant it may not be that. Are you certain that the valve timing is correct?

Am certain that valve timing is on was running really good at one time several months ago. Have a new shut off valve going to the heater plug. Think it might be that timing chain tensioner.
