the tractor smokes when you first crank it, after it warms up it is not so bad. The engine was built about 1 year ago. I brought it back in the shop the other day and pulled the injectors, checked for correct pressure (2570psi) and leakage, found none, checked pump timing it shows dead on with the engine at 16% btdc. with the tractor running if you advance the pump it will try to cler out but not completely and leaving the pump there make for hard starting when cold. It doesnt has a manifold heater. anybody see anything i may have missed,

Hey Guys,

If you find anything solid please start a new post with info. It's too cold where I live and it's my loader tractor and I can't tear it down this time of year. Need it to move snowbanks to make room for more snow.

Thanks to all.

We have a 1978 and a 1980 MF 245 and neither one smoke bad on startup/cold. Over 5600 hours total for both. Good Luck! Interested to see what you find out.

I got this from Big Dean last year.

When the MF245 came out the had made some changes to the flue system on the engines to meet the environmental specs that went in to effect on tractor engines the exhaust always smelled bad at would burn your eyes. It made it very difficult to hook up to an implement with the engine running. it also effected the way the engine idled this also caused the to smoke when they were first started. That part of your problem is just the nature of the MF245 we had lots of complaints on that especially from people that had older MF diesels. The skipping above a 1000 RPMs is caused by either the valves needing adjusting or bad injector. Big Dean

The 245 uses a different style of injection pump. The ususal 152 perkins timing is 24 btdc were as the 245 is 16 btdc. The 245 has a timing advance located at the bottom of the injection pump. There is a vane type pump located in the injection pump. Pressure from this pump advances the time to 24 btdc when engine is running. I have seen the inlet and outlet lines crossed on the injection pump that cause a loss of fuel supply which cause the vane pump not to advance the timing. The lines get switched at the fuel filter usually when the tractor has been seperated for repairs. This may be your problem.

Ralph, My 245 also smokes badly when cold. Is there a diagram of line placement in the shop guide for this tractor? I do need to get one so I can do a few other repairs to it. It has smoked like this since it was new in 79, it was my Dad's tractor. It only has 1000 hours on it. The only other problem with it is slop in axle pivot. Thanks & Regards, Davis

I have never seen a Massey diagram for the fuel lnes. There are arrows on the fuel filter housing, the arrow pointing away from the fuel filter goes to fuel inlet, (rear of pump). Massey does not carry the filter, but on the inlet line, located below the large fitting that screws into the injection housing is a small strainer type filter. This can cause fuel restriction and also located below the strainer is a plunger type pressure relief valve that controls the pressure for the vane pump located in the injection pump which advances the timing. I always remove that and look for problems. Also the small transfer pump located on right side of engine made have an internal failure. Anything that can cause low fuel pressure in the injection pump will cause loss of timing advance, which results in smoking. If you know someone who owns a Cat rubber tire back-hoe (Perkins engine)416,426 and has a service manual for the unit there will be break down of the timing advance, the fuel pressure valve, and the fuel strainer. The Perkins engines in the Cat back-hoe used the same timing advance as Massey Ferguson did on the 245. Also in the past I have found the head gasket failure at the center head bolt. This will not show-up in the coolant system, but when tractor is worked under heavy load, one will notice blow-by at the crankcase breather. A good way to check is remove hood, fuel tank, valve cover, and check center head bolt. Massey has changed the head gasket design to correct the porblem.
Hope this may help some 245 owners.

Hey Donnie,

If you find the problem please post the solution as I was out sucking fumes from my 245 today. Between the smoke and the 16 below F. was a fun day.

This is a long shot but maybe you need to check and see if someone previously may have installed the wrong nozzles in the injectors. It is easy to do as most CAV nozzles will interchange on the injector bodys. I found this on a 1130 where it had 2705 nozzles installed. It smoked bad and had bad power due to more fuel being delivered to the cylinders. Could have been a disaster but got lucky and saved this one. A Massey dealer or a pump shop can check the numbers for you.
