I am looking at a 44 special to buy it run good 2 years ago, thought it would work good in woods skidding logs. Now my questions are. How strong are they in comparison to Farmalls Is it as strong as a M or stronger? Do there steering gear boxes have problems? This one was trike changed to wide front. What kinds of power sterring did they have and is there anywhay to rig up power steering on them.. Ihis tractor is not going to be restored just worked.. Any help would be appreciated .. Thanks Jim

i probably have one just like yours, look at tractor photo gallery, look for "shannon bone" if thats exactly what you have.. i didnt have any problems with that power steering and steering box.. they are pretty good.. mostly i just found loose bolts. never gave me any trouble at all except i blew the power steering line, costed me 23 bucks for new line..they are sure nice to have one! transmission box,if theres no oil in it.. u ll never know..thats what happened to me but so far they are like new! once awhile im hard on it, they are very reliable! would be very safe to say, its very good tractor..you got more than enough power to pull a good sized tree, i just did that few weeks ago, a foot and half wide 40ft dead tree, wasnt rotten yet but had 100ft cable and it pulled it down with ease! alot of water weight in my 18.4x38 tires..u wouldnt have any trouble pulling logs!

Your lucky than, i grew up on the farmalls, and still have two hanging around. dont think that i have drivin a single letter series and some of the # series tractors that have not locked into two gears at once. Them lettered tractors also have givion me heck in winter if they have been out a bit in the weather. they collect water like mad than will freze in winter time. the 44 wont less the case is cracked or the shift boot is rooted out. and even then it will not be as bad as the farmalls.

Although the power steering kits are long gone, Char-Lynn (now part of Eaton) manufactures a general purpose "torque multiplier" in several versions, which is readily adaptable as an inline shaft type power steering unit. It has 7/8" keyed input and output shafts, like MH steering shafts.
To make this work as a PS unit, a mounting bracket would have to be fabricated, and the unit plumbed into the live hydraulics with a priority valve, for safety's sake (otherwise you could lose the PS when using the hydraulics for another purpose). The PS will rob about 1/4 of the flow from the other hydraulic attachments when turning, nothing when the steering wheel is not moving. I would estimate that the complete setup, including the torque multiplier, the mounting bracket (get it fabbed by a local machine shop), the priority valve, and hose, connectors, etc. would run about $500. Alternatively, you could look for a good used Char-Lynn kit (look down a few postings). I would say that they are scarce, if not rare; I would have some reservations about putting used parts into my steering system unless I was very sure that they were serviceable. The $500 would look like a bargain if the tractor did something unpredictable and ended up turning over.
I overhauled a high-arch steering box in the fall and found it to be a challenge. There are some posts in the archives you can search for more information.

the 44 special is a much better tractor then the M first the trans is much better as to the gear ratio. there is no big jump in gear speed like the M. live hyd is only if you have the pump on the engine [left front] as to the steering box the only thing i have seen is if the bolts have come loss or they are run dry [with out oil ] and some did come with P.S. but seeing they changed the front to a wide most of the parts from the narrow will not fit and you do have a high arch because the std. never had a narrow front. a lot of 44s had 3pt. and live pto also. i also think they are just better all around then a M. real easy to work on. and as for power the 44s is a little bigger like 3 to 6 horse

the 44 or 44Specail both will stop a mud hole into an M farmall. THe farmall will be prong to rear end problems and doulble gear jams. the hyd on the 44 is livve unlike the M. The gear boxes are not a major concern on the MH's, but the STANARD front end on them wears and is expensive to have rebuilt. i would switch the narrow front with a high arch front end that can be bought off ebay for a fair price. as for the power steering yes that was an after market option. not sure if it was a factory option, but dont beleive so.
