Like a good boy, I went to clean the filter screen for the hydraulic pump (accessable via the PTO shifter cover) when changing the fluid. At least with the live PTO setup, the filter has a steel hydraulic line running right over top it. It looks to me like getting the filter out would require taking the whole top cover off in order to have room to work. Could this be right?? Anyone else successfully clean this filter screen?

On the MF35X I found that I had to lift the top cover to remove it properly. The filter was screwed in and held in place by wire. The difficulty is in removing and replacing the twisted up wire, which is twisted around the relief valve. If this is what it looks like in the MF165 then you will probably have to remove the cover. You may be better to replace the filter rather than trying to clean it!
