I saw a tractor this past week while visiting family in south central IL. A MF 98. I am a IH man mostly but have owned five MF's in the last twenty years or so but never heard of a MF 98. It is diesel but the motor nothing like I have ever seen before. It had GM on it. I could not figure out how it work, could not find a injector pump or injectors. The generator ran off a shaft out of the back of the motor not off the fan pulley. Also had two aircleaner's on it comming thru the front of the hood. Also no 3pt hitch, looked like a wheatland style build tractor. Does any one know what I saw and anything on this tractor, year's built, hp, kind of motor? Thanks

As for price on the Massey 98 you described $13,500. If you look on the dealer's website there are two of them the other lists for $17,000.

Hi Larry

As mentionned in previous post it is a GM 3-71
2 stroke diesel engine. There is no injection pump the injectors are on top of the head and
they each include a piston operated pump which is
actuated by a rocker and push rod from the camshaft. The big box where the air filter is
connected on the side of engine is the turbocharger..it is an gear air blower that push
compressed air in engine to increase compression
and evacuate exhaust. There are no intake or exhaust valves in these engines. The throtle linkage was very tricky to adjust on these engines
because the control linkage was connected to each
injector. It remembers me many hours operating
these very noisy tractors.

Happy healty and prosperou$ new year

Just 2 things the box on the side is a supercharger not turbocharger and they do have valves but they are only intake or exhaust can't remember which

Corrections...

Detroit diesel (GM) 3-71 You'r right for the supercharger
turbocharger is driven by a turbine supercharger
is driven by gears

Early engines had 2 exhaust valves per cylinder
later engines had 4 exhaust valves per cylinder
but no intake valves

My memory failed after your comment I digged in dusty old techinfo manuals.

Sorry for the confusion

"later engines had 4 exhaust valves per cylinder" : they are named "N" series like 6-71N vs 6-71(2 EX valves/cylinder)

Larry B, The tractor you saw was a Oliver super 99 diesel with Massey Ferguson tin on it. It came with a three cylinder, two cycle Jimmy diesel engine in it. Massey put their pants on it and called it 98. It was built around 1962. Hope this is of some help. ----- -Harold

MF 98 was sold in 1959 and 1960; 500 were bought in a batch from Oliver; the engine is a GM-Detroit 2-cycle, 213 CID ( 3 cylinders of 71 CID each, or simply a 3-71 GM). It corresponds to Oliver 990 GM as tested in Nebraska(test 661) on july 7 to july 18, 1958.(Oliver Super 99 GM, Nebraska test 559, in 1955 seems to be rather similar to 1958 Oliver 990 GM). MF 98 arrived on the market before the Mini-MO MF 97. A very nice color picture of MF 98 is shown on top cover of the book : Massey Ferguson Tractors by Michael Williams.
