IM LOOKING AT BUYING A LARGER TRACTOR FROM A NEIGHBOR.THE PROBLEM IS THAT HE CANNOT GET THE TRACTOR TO SHIFT INTO ALL OF THE GEARS.THE TRACTOR CAN BE SHIFTED IN LOW/HIGH WITH NO PROBLEM BUT TO SHIFT THE TRACTOR INTO ANY GEAR OTHER THAN FIRST WILL NOT WORK. THE TRACTOR JUST SEEMS TO BOG DOWN AND NOT GOINTO GEAR.HE ALSO SHOWED ME IT WOULD DRIVE IN REVERSE BUT NOW THE TRACTOR WILL NOT EVEN GO IN REVERSE.IM INTERESTED INTHE TRACTOR BUT DONT KNOW WHY THE TRACTOR WONT SHIFT INTO ALL GEARS.COULD THE TRACTOR BE LOW ON TRANSMISSION FLUID OR WHAT????? ?
ANY AND ALL HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

I'm not familiar with the 298, but could it be that the shifter is out of position? Engine bogging down sounds like maybe locked in two gears. good luck

Sounds like a clutch fault, the High Low is an epicyclic and thus easier to engage. Try moving the pin on the clutch lever (on end of shaft coming from bell housing) into the PTO position (furthest forwards) as this gives more movement. Also adjust up as far as possible. I had a customer with a similar problem and it turned out that two of the pivot pins on the clutch levers on the pressure plate had broken. Take the bottom inspection plate off and have a look assuming no loader blocking access....
