I guess you could describe the 165 as a utility. It does every thing asked of it around our place. It is has a small enough wheel base to navigate the hardwood forrest here in the Cimmeron Valley, yet plenty of horsepower to do all the jobs required of a tractor too.

Early tractors had Perkins AD4.203 Diesel and dry brakes.(Exhaust on left)
Later(most of them)had PerkinsAD4.212 Diesel and wet brakes.(exhaust on right)
The M.F.168 had the AD4.236 along with the 175/8 tractors

All 165 diesels had Perkins AD4-203 engines. Early 165 gas models had Continental G176 engines. Late 165 gassers had Perkins 212 c.i. engines.

Could be the 4-236 Perkins....That's what's in the family MF175...and I think they are just about the same tractors. Excellent tractor. Bushog any pasture effortlessly with any size mower, from average to big. Drag big Pine Logs. Grade a long gravel and sand driveway. Dig a pond w/ the 3-pt and an old scoop. We do all those things with our 175, so I would say they are good for just about anything.

165 diesels all have Perkins Ad4-203 engines, not 236s. They are about 10HP less than the 175 but the rest of the tractor is the same. They are technically utility tractors in that the operator straddles the transmission case. They were available as standard clearance or Hi-Arch. Most standards are on 28" wheels, although the latest ones were available with 30". The HI-Archs were on 38".

Good to know...that why I said "might be"...Our 175 is on the 38" wheels....not a cheap tire when you need one. I would guess that even though the 165 is about 10hp less, that it still would make quick work of bushhoggin, and the like.

I have a MF 165 diesel, about 1970, that has 26" rims. I think that the rim width is 16" and it has 18" wide tires. It has a plain disc center, not the adjustable type. I thought that the wheels were from another brand of tractor but there is a part number and a picture in the parts manual. Has anyone seen these wheels or know the history of their use?

Should be the Perkins D4-203. Good tractor.
