I have a MF 255 with the A4-236 Perkins diesel motor that is using allot of oil. Now it only has 1700 original hours and I am the second owner. I have used the Marvel Mystery Oil with no luck to try to loosen the rings up a bit if stuck. Now I know one of the rings could be broke, but is their any other tricks to try before tearing into it. What about usinsg some type of powder I heard about before to let get sucked into the airintake to scar the cylinder walls a little in hopes of seating the rings?? I have heard this is a tractor puller trick.

I bought a new MF 255 in 1981 for use in the almond orchards. I still have it but have formally retired it from active duty as it was replaced by a MF 4345. It was run hard doing mostly PTO work with a 500 gallon orchard sprayer and a 10' 3 point flail mower. I rebuilt the engine at about 4000 hours as it was burning oil and had lost some compression. If you have to rebuild the engine, consider the annual useage of the tractor when deciding how complete of a rebuild (read money spent). Good luck. The 255 was and is a very good tractor. Merry Christmas. Ray (California)

Actually I am not sure of its entire life, but it is basically in excellent conditon other than the oil problem,so I hope they took care of it. I have a feeling it has never really worked hard in its life. I put both a brand new inner and outer air filter, checked breather tube, new head gasket, and found a cracked valve seal, but never went no further. I wish I had of now. I should have known it would take more than that to use a good bit of oil. I checked the valve guides while I was in their and they all where well within tolerance according to the manual. I was just wondering. Is it possible to have the inner air filter a little to tight and could cause maybe a loss of air? I dont remember how it is made so I guess I should go take a look. I was just wondering if I could have it to tight and could close off some of the holes in filter. Like I said I should go look at how the filter is made to even see if that is possible to restrict it by maybe having it a little tight. Never thought much about it until the other day. It also has an aftermarket Donaldson air cleaner that looks like it was professionally added that is clean.

Has the tractor lead a "sheltered" life? Not getting up to operating temp after each start, lugging alot at low RPM's, not working it hard? We have a MF 255 with 203D and it uses little oil and smokes little. Before your next oil change add a quart of auto trany fluid, don't overfill, and WORK it. It should help if the rings are 'sticky', then change oil and filter. May take two doses. Then, if it still uses oil, think about a compression test and overhaul.

I run all MF tractors and i have a 275 with 4-248 engine which is close enough! Perkins engines are long lived but at 1700 hours if the previous owners were poor on care it could be in bad shape. My 275 has 3100 hrs and the oil hardly gets dirty at 100 hour oil changes, and never needs topping off. Have you tried the simple things first, such clean air filter and no restictions, plus if the crankcase breather is pluged it will suck oil big time. This is often overlooked it could be full of dirty build up or wasp nest or anything, check it closely. Next thing is the head gasket could be bad, even a small a loss of compression on one bore will also cause it to use oil. From there it gets to overhaul time.

I wouldn't put any kind of abrasive in the crankcase. I have got good results from some of the additives, you can get at any auto parts store. If the power is still good, I would continue to run. A quart every eight hours of use is close to average. alvinnms
