I plan to bale some hay next season. I have older equipment (understatement of the year)and none of my tractors have live power.
I need to know if a MH 44 Special 4 cyl. will handle a small square baler (70 pound twine tie)
Any information would be appreciated.

Should have more than enough power. I use a Massy 33 with an (as old) IH baler. Hand clutch to disengage wheels is better than trying to get it out-of-gear when the baler gets overloaded. I find the location of the PTO shaft (higher above the drawbar than most any other brand) puts an extreme angle on the shaft making it complain alot when turning.

Your 44 should work well with a baler. I have pulled my 336 JD with our 44 may times. Even windrows are important but they are with any baler.
Good luck

it should have more than enough power to do that job, already broke 2 pto shaft brush hogging... get over running clutch and put it on the pto shaft...

Sure it will, your 44 has near 50 hp.I use a 2N ford with less than half that much power. start out in 1 st gear and out of the windrow, let it get up to speed before it gets into the hay .

That 44 Special you bought with Hitch-All, did
not have a lever on the right, between the brakes
and fender for live PTO clutch? It was an option,
but most Specials came through with it. Running
70 lb. bales is not difficult for the Special, but
inching the over ride clutch eases the operation
considerably for you and the transmission. Though
about a two day 'sweat-labor' job, finding a parked Special, with live PTO clutch, to swap
transmission cases, gives you the convenience. It
is easier to change cases, than pull the brake &
live clutch assembly. Avoid any different models
than what you have, headaches mushroom, due to subtle changes. The case with axles is about $200.

Jim

We would use our 44's on the baler when the big tracors were tied up with other duties. Will have to admit the 44's wern't my first choice and I learned to shift out of gear REAL FAST to keep the baler from slugging.

Merry Christmas to all
