in High gear before my Massey Pony dies. I'm sure its a fuel problem, but where to look? When it dies I can crank it, but I have to leave the choke on.

I've changed the fuel bowl assembly,
put on new 1/4" fuel line,
cleaned the carburetor once,
Looked for loose stuff in the tank.
When it stalls, I can take the plug with the metering hole out of the bottom of the carb, clean it out and I'm good for about another 300ft.
Its also has new points, condenser, plug wires, cap, and rotor button.

Do you have good fuel flow to the carb? If you disconnect the fuel fitting at the carb, does it come out in a steady stream that fills the tube? If it doesn't then your tank exit could be clogged. If it does, there is a problem with in the carb. Does the carb have a big drain plug on it? If it does, when you open it does fuel gush out? If it does that your problem may be the float/needle valve. Hope this helps.

Actually, check to see if you are getting spark right after it quits.

From the description, it could be a failing condenser, or high tension coil. as they are run they get warm enough for clearances to tighten up and they short out. Also check for good grounds on the coil, and between battery, chassis, and charging system.

What happens if you're in a lower gear? Does it run and pull a load OK then? Does the governor open yhe throttle as you put it under load? When it's in neutral, will it run continuously and smoothly at Idle, and at mid RPM range? Could be a lot of things from your brief description, so you'll have to use the process of elimination. Unrestricted air flow, Timing advancing with increasing RPM. When you "cleaned the carb", did you disassemble it completely, immerse all the parts in Real Carburator Cleaner ( the stuff that comes in a gallon can with a dunking basket and takes the skin of your fingers and the paint off your carburator)? Did you blow all the passages clear with compressed air? Does the old gal have enough compression to pull her own weight in road gear? It would be interesting to hear what you find out, once you fix the problem. Good luck with it, Jim

When I cleaned the carb, I just took it apart, took the jet out-(I guess the plug on the bottom with the hole in it is a jet)took out the main nozzle and cleaned everything with spray carb. cleaner. I guess the next step is to soak in carb cleaner.
Its got new rings,They haven't seated yet, The old set was fresh .040 over (bought deceased fellow's restoration project) and hadn't seated yet either, but I didn't know that when I pulled it apart. It still blows visible oil vapor out the crankcase breather.
It acts like it'll sit and run all day at idle and mid-range, at least. Don't think I've tried it wide open. It Pulls off from a stop in 3rd. gear better than Dad's cub, It just acts like it runs out of gas after a bit.
It was running a rubber hose with an inline auto fuel filter when I got it. I put a used filter bowl assembly with a new screen in it on there so it'd be much closer to original. The filter bowl came off a full size MM tractor.
I guess it could be the coil. The system has been converted to 12v, but I saw it was a Delco coil and assumed since the distribuitor was Autolite that the coil was also 12v.
The governor is opening the throttle.

Yet one other possibility if the coil and condensor check okay, and that is- Will it sit and idle for a long time? If it will, the place to check next is the brass fitting that screws into the bung on the bottom of the tank- it is likely nearly fully plugged from dirt and grit and "stuff". If you run with an inline filter, you can get away with ripping out the brass screen (I actually was at a location just the other day that had those brass screens in bulk and they had no idea what they were for!).

Well, The carb soak appears to have done the trick. Drove all the way from the farm to home in 3rd gear, never a sputter. Didn't blow too much oil either. Gotta run her more often now.
Thanks for all the help, guys!
