MH 33 shifting problem

I have a gearbox problem. When I shift into reverse, if the two gears do not have the teeth completely aligned, the reverse gear will bump into the drive gear. When this happens the drive gear (which is attached to the centre slide block by the shift fork) will bump the gears partially into second gear. This locks up the shifter with the reverse gear slide about 75% through its travel, and the second gear slide about 50% through its travel.

The only way to correct is to remove the shifter, get in there and slide the second gear slide back into neutral, the reverse slide gear back into neutral, and then try all over.

If the gear teeth happen to allign, the reverse slides in no problem and the second gear slide stays where it should. I've tried to tighten up the detent balls on the slides hoping that the second gear slide won't move so easilly. This seems to have helped a little bit, but not much.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

You can also pull the cover off the end off the rails (under fuel tank) and tap rail back. Pull the shifter off and weld up the ball, so it won't slip between the rail blocks. Good luck

The detail gets hazy, but after fifty years, it
might have seen some wear and abuse. Swapping out
the 3 rails, forks, block/etc. from a down MH
44,33,30, that seems to shift correctly, might
solve your problem. First, you would need to see
if ALL numbers in the Parts List Manuals, match. You can find a transmission case, wheels gone,
sitting by a tree, many places. If the boot has kept the water/rust out, this may be the answer.
