I'm having trouble with the hydraulics on the MF 165. Doesn't appear to be any fluid getting through to the front end loader. Very slow movement only. I suspect it could be the hydraulic pump but not having a manual I can't find where the pump is on the tractor. can anyone help please...

Spend a little money on real MF manuals, and you will be surprized how things can be worked out.

Do you have a valve just in front of the seat on the right on top of the case that you have to move when you use the loader? Does your 3PT work normally? If you have that valve, your using the 3PT pump to run your loader, 4gpm. If you have large diameter cylinders it may move slow. If you don't have the diverter valve and the hoses for the loader come out of the PTO shift cover you have a seperate pump piggybacked on the 3ptr pump.

Let us know the answers to these and Dennis' questions and we can give you a better answer.

CH - Thanks for your reply also. Will check out what you have said and get back to you after I've had a go at sorting the problem out.

The hydraulic pump is in the belly of the tractor, behind the pto engagement lever. Did it work fine previously, or did you just mount the loader? If the weather is extremely cold, your loader is going to be slow till the hydraulic oil warms up. Make sure the draft lever is in the fully raised position. There is a hydraulic response lever toward the rear on the right hand side of the platform. Move it to the fast position. If the loader is newly installed, I'd try new hydraulic hose ends. I have seen this help. Make sure your hydraulic oil is the proper type and is in good condition. Check your hydraulic filter. I think there should be a filter in front of the radiator. If not, there is a screen behind the pto engagement lever. If none of this helps, you could have a malfuntioning pressure relief valve on the hydraulic pump, or a worn pump. Someone more knowledgeable can tell you what max pressure should be. Check it with a good pressure gauge at one of the hydraulic outlets. If the pressure is good, find someone with a flow meter and see what your pump is putting out. Pumps are high priced and replacement should be the last resort. Hope this helps.

System pressure is 210 Bar (3000PSI)

The hydraulic pump is not dificult to overhaul and all parts are available. You can either fit a full kit with bearings etc or just an O-ring kit and piston rings. Control valves are also available. try www.vapormatic.com

The most dificult part is getting the pump out. Basically remove lift cover, remove split pin from torque tube, slide forward, engage high range and remove top shaft. Remove PTO shaft, take out pins and take pump out through the top of the center housing. Don't try to lift the lift cover by hand as it's heavy and you always end up damaging either your fingers or parts of the linkage. Always replace the PTO seal as they always seem to leak after being disturbed.

One thing to check first, there is a stack pipe which comes up from the pump to the lift cover. You will either have a diverter valve or a plate to the front left hand corner. Remove the two bolts and pull off the valve/cover. If the pipe does not come out with it pull it out. Replace the o-rings on the pipe and rebuild. Be careful to make sure the pipe goes back into the pump...

Russel, I have a real shop manual, and parts book, for a MF165 that I purchased from a Massey dealer. Will take $65.00 for both, including shipping and insurance. The parts manual cost more than that. Like new condition. alvinnms

Dennis Bush, Thomas and Alvin Wilkinson - Thanks for your replies guys. I'll have a go at fixing the problem using your advice. Thanks for the offer of the manual Alvin but I'm in New Zealand and I'll try and sort something out here first.
