I have a 1961 MF 65 Diesel and I have trouble with the power steering. It only turns one way. I know there is the adjustment for the valve but when i go one way it makes it turn easy one way and not the other. I can't find the right point. Do you have any suggestions? Do you know how much hp this tractor has both engine and PTO? Also the clutch will not work for the PTO. Is there a way i can adjust this or is the clutch frozen up? If you have any information on these problems, please reply. Thanks

i reckon your problem will be at the cotter pin on the adjustable arm of the valve on top of the power steering ram housing. when you turn it one way it works, but not the other, that indicates to me that there is wear at that pin. there cant be any play one way or the other at that pin. you may need to drill it out & put another pin in it or buy another adjustment arm & pin. but i believe that will be where your problem lies.

I can't help you with the power steering problem. The clutch on the 65's were a two stage clutch. Push part way down and the tractor quits moving, but the pto stays engaged. Push all the say down and the pto stops also. You should be able to feel increased resistance when the pto clutch starts to disengage. If not, try adjusting the linkage. The clutch linkage is all on the left hand side of the tractor. The pedal is connected to a rod that runs forward to the clutch housing. At the housing, the rod connects to an arm that is clamped to the clutch release shaft. Make sure that the pin that connects the rod to the arm is in the forward hole. Check your clutch free play. Depress the clutch pedal untill you feel resistance. There should be a 1/8" gap between the ear on the arm and the clutch housing. If not, loosen the bolt in the clamp and put a punch through the hole in the end of the shaft. Rotate that shaft till you feel increased resistance. Tighten the clamp. That should get you close. If that is adjusted correctly and you still can't engage the pto, take the plate off the bottom of the clutch housing and look in there with a light. In between the flywheel and the primary pressure plate, you will see the secondary pressure plate. There are three short capscrews with locking nuts in the front of the secondary pressure plate. (They are in there with those heavy coil springs.) These are what activate the pto clutch. There should be a .090" gap between the heads of the bolts and the primary pressure plate. If that is correct, and it still don't work, you can narrow that gap some and see if you can get the clutch to work. If none of this works, engage the ground pto, (move the pto forward) put the tractor in gear and shut it off. Try turning the pto shaft with someone pushing the clutch pedal to the platform. If it turns easily and you have checked out all the above, you need to have the clutch repaired. If it won't turn, put a big pipe wrench on the pto shaft, (might even need a piece of pipe over the end of the wrench for even more leverage)have someone push the clutch to the platform, and get it to turn. Then attach a load on the pto, push the clutch, put it into normal pto, (will probably have to shut off the tractor to do so), start the tractor, and use the clutch to engage and disengage the pto several times. Sometimes if the tractor was stored for a long time, the clutch facings will stick to the pressure plate. Hope this helps.

Everett,

Sounds like you need to do more adjusting. There is also an adjustment for the engine clutch that effects the engagement for the PTO, since both are tied together in this type of tractor. You should contact Big Dean at his website. He is an expert on older MF tractors. His website is: Link
