Looking at a 2775 to buy and get the family farm up and started again. Has 1900 hrs with duals and good tires, cab with a/c and seems to run well. Does the V8 perkins have a bad reputation? How about the drive train? It is a 1980. The guy is asking $5800. I know it probably is a fuel guzzler but we only have 150 acres to farm and want to be able to get done fast. Thanks for your help guys.

As a former Mf service tech I disagree with some of the opinions presented and agree with others. understand they are only opinions. First of all,in my opinion, the 2705 series were a good unit. As stated, the 24 speed units were not reliable and frequently caused problems. If it is 8 speeds, then it is a rugged unit that should give very reliable service. The 640 perkins is an exellent engine as they are very well built and last a long time and not bad on fuel as one might think. Parts may be a problem for the engine but if taken care of, it should be ok for a long time. The 8speed conversion may still be available for these tractors from a good MF dealer. They can tell you if they are available. This makes a tractor out of a 2705 series. Simply by replacing the input section of the transmission and modifying the shifters. If the tractor doesnt miss or use oil then, it may be a good buy. Otherwise get a different tractor. They have massive internals in the trans and rear end and are very rugged. Give it a shot. It may be a super tractor.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. The day before dad counted out the money I talked to a dealer that advised me to buy only a 1980 or newer and get the 8 speed. We did buy it and it does happen to be a 1980 with 8 speed trans. Has a little lope at idle but runs great otherwise. Thanks again for the info.

Great! The lope may be due to the governer in the injection pump. If it has an inline pump on it, the governer spring causes this because it is strong and is supposed to be for response to changes in engine load. The old 1155 tractors with the 540 Perk had a really tight gov in them and the would kind of hop under a load at idle in gear simular to a hot cam in a souped up car engine!! Good luck with your Fergie!!

MF KID:

Question for you. My dad has a MF 2805 with the 24 speed transmission. Needless to say the trans is pretty well gone. It hasn't moved in a few years. I heard a rumor that someone replaced the transmission with a semi transmission. I'm not really sure it is possible, but it does have my curiosity going. My brother and I are going to be running the farm since dad's getting older, and we had thought about trying to bring the workhorse back to life. Do you have any insight, advice, or solutions for the transmission problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The MF 27XX series were not very reliable. V8 engines in tractors has not worked yet. Transmission was a problem. Look for a 856 or 1066 IH. They are relatively cheap and very reliable. Ray

....at the top of the page, use "2805" or "MF 2805" and read carefully! I had a 2805 with the 24 speed, it didn't break down but I didn't work it hard at all. Unless you KNOW the previous owner and he took care of his equipment, I would pass. No, I would RUN AWAY!

i hate to say it but, unless the tractor has an eight speed trans. i wouldn't buy it. the powershift trans. was a lemon with the v-8 model tractors.
also watch out for the 640 perkins motor parts are becoming very hard & expensive to come by. had to wait 2 months for head gaskets, they had to special make them for our tractor all the way from england

DON'T BUY IT! The V-8 Perkins are not very well thought of here in IOWA. If you have your heart
set on a MF almost anything with the 354 6cyl.
would be much better. Or, if you don't mind looking at orange stuff any of the 7000 ALLIS's
are a cheap and fairly reliable unit. If you only have 150 acres to farm, a bigger tractor without a cab should be fairly inexpensive regardless
of color.
