My friend is looking to buy a 1959 MF model 85 with the gas engine, dual hydros, torque adjusting rims, and original paint with one small dent on the hood. The only problems we know of is just that it smokes a little when you let it set for a few weeks then go to crank it (valve guides), supposidly needs brakes, and needs one rear tire. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of this model tractor and what to look for when we go to look at it? Also how hard are parts to come by? Example: engine rebuild kit, brake parts, trans or any mechanical parts. The price is around $2500 to $3000.....does this sound fair? MF isn't my usual brand so i'm clueless to them for the most part other than knowing how to run them and that they have continental engines. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this for me!!!!

I have 2 MF 85 gas tractors and a Super 90 diesel.
They are a good tractor, still do a days work without any problems. Parts and overhaul kits are available.

My 85 has competed in antique tractor pulls as heavy as 12,000#. It doesn't really like 12,000# but competes well up to 10,000#. Not bad for a tractor that weighs in at 5,420#.To date no engine, transmission, or differential problems.

i would stay away from this model since the continental motor is rather hard to find parts for, also the power steering pump was a little unreliable, but most of the other massey models such as 50-65-165-255 etc. series were as good as they come, and parts a quite common and easy to purchase. for anyone to say that one certain make is the only way to go, has never owned a JD 710 or 2010 etc., or a ih560-660. so be carefull of people that are color blind, each tractor company made good & not so good models. unfortunate that this particular model may fall into the not so good side.

Disappointment, for a work tractor. These first
series MF models were suppose to replace the MH
444's/44 Special. A joke. They were weak toys of
Ferguson concept. Many were rapid trades to other
colors, as they failed to be dependable. A cheap
built, exploited '50'. Massey-fallapart. For $3K,
look to a better color gasser:1600 Oliver. The 85
was a lazy, high-maintenance, low-dependability
red excuse. A signal of what was in the future:
nothing unique. Avoid these parts, parts eaters.

The only part of an 85 that is a joke is that worthless 277 Continental diesel. Isnt that what a 444 used also? I do know that 85's and Su 90's shared the same drive train and a Su 90 is capable of working circles around a 444.

Interesting you feel that way about these Masseys. I guess it must be a matter of opinion. I have a Super 90 diesel, and that's one good tractor. I also have run Oliver tractors. Super 77, 88, and 1800. You could not give me an 1800 for free. I cut all my hay with a Super 90 and a nine foot haybine. (1000 rd and 2500 sq bales worth) It is a great starter in cold weather, has plenty of power for it's size, and is operator friendly. I don't know much about being a parts eater, since I have only rebuilt the water pump on it, and that cost around $40.00. Not bad for 5 years of daily service, in my opinion. In regards to the original post, I think the price is a bit high. I paid $3500 for this Super 90 in excellent condition and new paint 5yrs ago.
